Bioderma’s Sebium Range of Oil-fighting Products

Sebum isn’t something you want to be sitting on my skin for too long. While sebum is required to prevent moisture loss and keep the skin supple, too much of it can cause clogging of the pores. It also causes our skin to look oily and shiny.

What stimulates sebum production?

1) Hormonal imbalance

2) Use of improper skincare

3) Diet and stress (e.g., A high-glycemic diet and high-stress levels)

Bioderma has just come up with an innovative solution to help regulate sebum in our skin. They created Fluidactiv Patent, the only patent in the market that which biologically regulates sebum, similar to that of a healthy skin.

I was eager to try the two products from their new range as I had oily combination skin and occasional acne which are caused by clogged pores.

Is it worth it?

Bioderma Sebium Lotion with Fluidactiv Patent (200ml)

This toning lotion is specially formulated to soothe and treat oily skin. It contains active ingredients to help balance the skin’s pH, reduce excess oil and hydrate the skin. Capryloyl Glycine in the formula also helps to limit the growth of P.acnes bacteria. It also contains Zinc Gluconate and Vitamin B6 which help reduces sebum production.

Verdict:

On first use, the toning lotion carries quite a strong energizing scent which I find it quite sharp and overwhelming. It’s one of those scents which could appeal to men.

The toner lotion itself is very soothing and hydrating on my skin. It felt comfortable on my skin, and it could be absorbed quickly into the skin.

Bioderma Sebium Mat Control with Fluidactiv Patent (30ml)

The Sebium Mat Control is a daily moisturizer that helps to control excess oil, soothe skin and prevent dryness effectively. With the Matt and Smooth technology (that comprises of mattifying micro powder and silicones), it allows the skin to stay matte for long hours. The mattifying formula also minimizes the appearance of large pores with Mushroom Extract’s astringent properties.

This moisturizer can also double up as a makeup base or primer. However, do avoid using on the eyes and lips. It is suited for combination, oily and sensitive skin type.

Verdict:

The product does its job of keeping the skin matte. After application, my skin felt so much smoother. For the next couple of hours, my skin did not feel as oily. The ingredients within the moisturizer seem to be regulating the sebum well and keeping the skin zero shine.

I do have mixed feelings about this product. The product contains Cyclopentasiloxane, a silicon-based cyclic compound and I wary about products containing silicon. The smooth finishing on my skin felt great due to the presence of silicones which gives rise to the smooth texture. That begs the question of whether it may clog the pores further or not. So I tried using the moisturizer overnight and truth be told, I had a couple breakouts. Perhaps this product didn’t really suit my skin type.

To me, I find that it works better as a day moisturizer, light makeup base or primer for those with oily skin. It does a fantastic oil-control job but it might not be that nourishing moisturizer which you want to leave on your skin overnight.
