Singapore: ‘Makan Paradise’

What’s a Singaporean-thing to do during the long National Day weekend? Gather family and friends at the table to ‘makan’. Eating seems to be one of our favourite past times because of our cultural diversity and uniqueness as a Singaporean are found embedded in our food.

To get an authentic taste of Singapore, you need first to get a taste of our local delicacies. Now I am so glad the Food Capital at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel is now offering a local-style Heritage buffet during this National Day month of August. You can either come down for a buffet lunch or dinner from 1 to 31 August 2018. Also, from 1 to 16 August 2018, you get to enjoy a durian buffet along the Singapore River during the buffet dinner. Come and have a taste of durians before the durian season is over!

Buffet Specials

Buffet menus are on a rotational basis. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that some of the local favourites like Nasi Lemak and Satay will stay. That’s because they are really delicious and true to its taste. Considering that this is a buffet, I would have to say that the food standard here is excellent. It was way beyond my expectations.

The dishes might not be on par with the Michelin-awarded hawker stalls, but they are still delicious and have that local flavour to it. Food is also prepared in small batches so that the food could be served fresh and warm from the kitchen.

The buffet also features some western dishes as well as other Asian dishes like Sushi, sashimi and tempura.

What are some of the food stations you must try?

Below are some of our food recommendations and dishes we had that evening at the Food Capital.

1. Nasi Lemak

I love the pandan-flavoured coconut rice and the chilli sambal that has that spicy kick to it. They did not just offer the basic Nasi Lemak toppings. They went over and beyond to prepare other typical Nasi Lemak side dishes like Otah, fried chicken wings, eggs, chicken cutlet and fried spam. It was quite a spread!

2. Satay Beehoon

This is another must-try dish as it is not as common as Hainanese Chicken Rice or Char Kuay Teow where you can try it at almost every hawker centre. It is simply bee hoon mixed with thick Satay gravy, and it tastes very flavourful. If you love spicy food, you will dig into this.

4. Other Asian Delights: Sushi, sashimi, Tempura

Every diner seems to be diving for the crab legs. I have seen some of their piling their plates with many fresh crab legs.

5. Childhood Tidbits

Take a walk down memory late with these tidbits which we locals used to eat when we were much younger.

6. Nyonya Kuehs

The 9-layer rainbow kueh was really fragrant and chewy. It’s fun just peeling off the coloured layers and eating it off layer by layer.

There are other desserts like cakes and puddings which would suit everyone’s taste.

7. Ice Kacang, Potong Ice cream and Ice Popsicles

There’s an Ice Kacang-making corner where you can customise your own ice kacang. Want to reminisce the old days? Then grab one of the childhood treats like these ice popsicles or Potong ice cream.

8. Durian Buffet

The durian buffet is offered during the buffet dinners from now till 16 August 2018. Over here, you can eat durian to your heart’s content. We had XO durians that evening. The durian flesh is very sweet and creamy. It has a light milky yellow colour. You can also enjoy some sweet juicy mangosteens along with the durians to ‘cool’ your body as the Chinese believe that durian is a very heaty fruit.

I wish this local-themed buffet with durian buffet becomes a tradition to keep our local food heritage alive.
