The Reins and the Horsebit

” We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (v.2)

Yesterday I had my first horseback ridding lesson with our instructor called Bell. After putting on our boots and helments,he led us to the stable and introduced to us this beautiful and charming horse with a brown sheen coat that glistens under daylight. It was suited for a brave medieval knight with a shining armour to hop on and gallop away in the wild fields. What a true beauty!

“Many people didn’t know about this. But,in fact, horseback riding is about character building. It teaches you how to be patient and confident in life. The horse is the follower and the rider is its master and leader.Being its master, you have to practise patience and understanding. Communication with your horses is essential as this builds trust between the rider and the horse.” Bell took a step closer to the horse and lifted up the reins, ” Everytime you pull the reins to stop the horse, the metal ring here ( horse bit) will cause a sharp and acute pain in its sensitive mouth.”What Bell had said had created this rippling effect in my heart as I begin to recall our daily devotions on how to stay spiritually fresh. The minute he mentioned that I had this image of God being the rider and us, being the horses. As followers, we have to put our trust in the Lord and be open to Him for guidance.

Then,Bell took a step closer to the horse and lifted up the reins, ” Everytime you pull the reins to stop the horse, the metal ring here ( horse bit) will cause a sharp and acute pain in its sensitive mouth.” This led me to think of how sometimes God is trying to steer us in the right direction, but we procrastinated and walked astray, like a lost sheep. When we disobey our master and wander off in my own paths, we come face to face with the “devil”. Like these “lost” horses, we could be standing at the edge of the cliff. At this moment, our master will pull the reins tight to prevent us from falling off the cliff. When the reins are pulled, the horse felt a sudden sharp, pain in the mouth. The pain was an excruciating one. It has left with no choice, but to follow its master’s commands. Sometimes, we undergo certain afflictions or sufferings in life maybe because God is preventing us from sinking into the traps or quicksand.
