My Raw Vegan Birthday Dinner @ The Living Cafe

Being an introvert, I like to keep things simple. I don’t really need loud party poopers, fancy balloons or streamers to celebrate the day I was born into this world. Seriously? All I need is some love and spending some quality time with the people who regard me as true friends. Nothing really beats that.

Like the old times, I would gather together with my friends to celebrate birthdays over little gifts and cake. Nothing too extravagant or expensive, but it’s just a simple affair that reflects the true meaning of this saying that goes, ‘it’s the thought that counts.’ But this year’s birthday celebration is pretty neat as I was asked out quite often to enjoy birthday treats and meals. That made my heart sing a sweet tune and at the same time, my friends were pretty accommodating when it comes to the type of places to dine. I prefer vegan, vegetarian or health living cafes. So, when they asked where I would like to have my birthday meal, I said, ‘Let’s go RAW!’

The Living Cafe and Deli (TLC) at Balanced Living which is located near Sixth Avenue is the cafe to be if I want to enjoy a good hearty raw meal. I’ve been here only twice so far and I’m really looking forward to be back again to try out their other raw food options. It’s a good thing that they offers a variety of food which include non-vegan dishes like fish and chicken burgers to cater to the masses. Having that said, it’s certainly both vegan and non-vegan friendly. If you just want to have a clean meal, I reckon you should hop into this cafe as grab some green juice and their signature raw foods.

Eunice ordered this fishy dish called the Catch of the Night which comprises of seared salmon, edammame and Hon shimeiji mushrooms. According to her, the dish was executed quite perfectly as the salmon was very fresh.

Vanessa was digging into some chicken homemade burgers with wedges. It consisted of chicken pattie, Aioli and cashew mayo. Little did I know that Aioli is actually a sauce made up of garlic, olive oil, salt and egg yolk. If you didn’t know, cashew is used as a substitute for creamy sauces and cheese in the world of raw foods. It’s this creative way of substituting food with healthier alternatives that pulled me right into the world of raw foods. Who cares if it’s really yummy or not? As long as it’s good for the body, I wouldn’t mind chomping it down.

While the other two musketeers indulge in the meaty affair, I went for their raw ‘cheese’ burger that has a raw pattie sandwiched in between to leafy lettuce. Where’s the cheese?  It ain’t cheese but blended cashews mixed with spices.

Nevermind if it didn’t look as mouth-watering as the meat dishes, it’s innovative and nutritious for the body.

To end my birthday celebration on a final note, I had a slice of raw German chocolate cake too!

Little tokens of love.

Time to make a birthday wish!
