Chinese Herbal Tea Recipe: A Women’s Tea

I’ve been visiting Botaniq Haircare or Gui Ren Tang (贵人堂) for my scalp treatments to treat my oily scalp and hair loss problem. I was introduced to this Chinese medicine-inspire beauty salon through Groupon where I bought the voucher coupon to try out their 8-in-1 Premium Botanical Deep Cleansing and Hair Rejuvenation Therapy. It has been really working really well for me so I’ve bought their packages and I’ve been visiting their outlet at Holland Village quite frequently.
Every time I am there for a treatment they would serve this deliciously sweet Chinese herbal tea which I grew to love. I felt really good drinking their tea so I asked their beauty therapist for the recipe and here it is!

1) Red dates ( 红槽 Hong Zao)

Make sure the dates are pitted as the seeds can caused alot of heatiness in the body (according to my mum).
Red dates are 70 to 80 times higher in Vitamin C than in grapes and apples!  It is also a source of
Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium.
They are also said to stimulate the production of white blood cells, improving body immunity, and decrease the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. It is also renowned for enriching and replenishing blood so they are a great nutritious food for the ladies during our special time of the month.

2) Dried Longans ( 桂圓 Gui Yuan)

It helps to tonify the heart and spleen, replenish qi and blood, and achieve a peaceful calm state of mind. Essentially, this is the ingredient which oozes out caramelized sweetness into the tea.

3) Goji berry (枸杞 Gou Ji )

Goji berries are an excellent source of antioxidants which could help reduce the risk of cancer.

4) American Ginseng Root (泡参 Pao Shen)

It contains zinc, vitamins A, B6 and C and polysaccharide glycans. It is considered a “cooling” ginseng thus it is best taken in the hot summer months. It can treat insomnia, lower bad cholesterol levels and combat stress and fatigue.

5) Chrysanthemum (菊花 Ju Hua)

This flower is said to treat respiratory problems, high blood pressure, and hyperthyroidism.
I wasn’t given the exact amount so I tried using all ingredients in equal portions except for the red dates and dried longans where I added a little more to sweeten up the tea.
The hair therapist was telling me how this tea could help women to replenish blood and boost blood circulation in our bodies. True enough, each ingredients in this recipe brings about several health benefits to the body. In other words, they are no different from the superfoods like Kale, Acai berry and Spirulina. Why didn’t I discover this earlier? There’s really a lot of potential in Chinese traditional medicine to boost overall health and wellness naturally.

I didn’t have American Root Ginseng at home so I used Codonopsis Root (dang shen or 黨參) which my dad has bought previously. It is sweet by nature and it helps in improving digestive system and corrects blood deficiency.
It didn’t alter the taste of the tea much though as I guess the main ingredients in this tea recipe is red dates, dried longans and goji berries. These ingredients are also used commonly to make confinement tea for pregnant women.

I highly recommend you to give this herbal tea recipe a try because this Chinese Herbal Tea can be so addictive and pleasant to taste! The ingredients are pretty affordable and you can purchase them in local supermarkets or any Chinese traditional medical halls in Singapore. The most expensive ingredient is probably the American Root ginseng which is higher in cost.
