Shangri-La Hotel. Singapore : My Secret Weekend Hide-out

Finding that commercial gym are too pack with people? There is this huge health and fitness wave that is taking over our island and suddenly gyms are getting really pack. If you are looking for a quiet escapade with great gym facilities, ample training space and even a nice pool with shady palm trees, you can consider this secret hide-out where I’ve been checking in over the weekends, spending some time chillin’ by the pool and enjoying their spa facilities. This has become my secret hideout ever since and here’s a sneak peak of my weekend escapade.

10.00am – Saturdays are the best days to laze around and just get out to get some sunshine and fresh air after spending 5 days stuck together with a laptop in a cocoon with minimal sunlight. I would hop out of bed by 8 am, grab a quick bite and take a train down to orchard MRT where I will catch a shuttle to that secret hideout. It’s a good thing that there are hourly shuttle buses that can ferry me to and fro which makes it rather convenient. Otherwise, I would have to take a 15 to 20 minutes walk into my secret hide-out which is tucked away from the bustling shopping belt along Orchard Road.

10.30 am – I was greeted with that sweet crisp clean scent the moment I entered the lobby area and then I would take an escalator down where I will be greeted with a beautiful view of the swimming pool with tourists and kids frolicking in the pool and sunbathing on the large beach chairs.

10.40 am – At the health club, I would enter this huge female changing room that links directly to the gym. The changing room housed a jacuzzi, steam bath, and sauna too. It also has this sitting area where you can rest and relax while surfing channels on television. There’s one more Television mounted to the wall at the jacuzzi area where you can watch TV while soaking yourself in the tub.

From bath towels to refreshing towels, bath essentials such as shampoo, soap, and even hair styling products are provided here. There’s a vanity table where you can do your makeup and prep your hair before heading to the town for a date.

Each locker is equipped with hangers and a plastic bag to contain your soil gym clothes or wet swimming costumes.

This jacuzzi is pretty legit because the water is kept at a warm temperature and it feels really nice to soak yourself in it.

10.45 am – Once I change into my gym wear, I would first start off with my usual training routine of running then ding circuit training exercises after. 10 minutes on the treadmill with varying speeds and 30 minutes doing 2 to 3 rounds of circuit exercises.

I don’t have to worry about a think when exercising here because the place is very clean. There are even alcohol wipes provided just in case you want to sterilize some equipment. There are also gym towels, fruit-infused water, mineral bottled waters and apples up for grabs.

Some of the machines provide TV and audio entertainment but they require earphones or headphones. In case, if you have forgotten to bring yours, you can also loan one from the beverage point where you can find bottled mineral water.

The fitness centre is located on level one of the Tower Wing and it overlooks the stunning swimming pool set amidst the lush greenery. But to get into the gym, you can access it through the changing rooms which are linked to the gym.

But on one particular occasion, I brought in a guest with me who is none other than my boyfriend, Sam to enjoy all the facilities with me. I also specially arrange for a personal training session for the both of us since I thought Sam might want to try out personal training. He has not gone through a personal training session before! We had Ivan who is the personal trainer at the health club, to guide us to do a workout in order for us to achieve our fitness goals.

The gym is well-equipped and there’s even some unique state-of-the-art equipment which you wouldn’t find it in other gyms. There are treadmills, half rack and weight stack machines, upright and recumbent bikes, fit balls, Jacob’s ladder and free standing punching bag.

My favourite part of this gym is the weight training area where you have ample of space to do circuit exercises. The selection of weights is quite extensive – all that big heavy toys for that muscular man who gyms regularly.

It was pretty interesting to watch Sam doing his circuit exercises as he looked very nervous and unsure of what to come next.

We mainly did a lot of strength and toning exercises that can be quite challenging especially the abs exercise where I had to lift myself up with the dumbbell in my hand. I was thinking to myself, ‘ Oh man, have I lost my stamina?’

12pm: After an hour of hard work, we headed to the 40 metre by the 20-metre outdoor pool for a refreshing dip! It is like swimming in a lagoon among the tall palm trees that sway in the breeze. I could catch up with some reading here while lounging at the beach chairs. It would have been perfect if I could spend a night over here, though!
