The Montigo Experience in Bali

IMG_1075
You’ve heard all about Montigo Resorts at Nongsa, Batam where it is a renowned idyllic seafront resort and it is so popular among us Singaporeans that the resort is always packed on weekends. Now, they have now extended their territory and is offering the luxurious Montigo Experience in Bali, Indonesia. It is nonetheless a perfect spot for a weekend getaway with the family, friends or lovers.
I am in love with Bali ever since I set foot year four years ago and it felt great to be back here again, visiting the new Montigo Resort in Seminyak, Bali which was just launched late last year in October 2015. This place has a marine theme with blue and white as the main colour scheme. It is such a calming colour and it makes you feel like you’re just by the beach, basking in the sun. It’s not too far from Potato Head Beach Club too where you can enjoy the sounds of the waves as they crash against the shore and the gorgeous view of the beach. Put on your beach gear and walk about 5 minutes to beach paradise.

This resort is perfect for newly-wed couples or families with kids. Soon, there will be more facilities such as the gym and Tilo Kids club to keep us entertained. Now that they have just opened their Spa, there’s always a good reason to laze around and spend more time in the resort itself without having to step out and about.

The basic rooms are their premier rooms and mind you, they are spacious. It looks almost like a suite to me. The room interior is sophisticated with all the heavy wooden furnishings but yet modern at the same time with the design and layout of the room.

Some of the basic room amenities such as complimentary Wifi, minibar with refreshments, in-room safe and flat-screen TV were all provided. There’s also a USB smartphone port charger at the bedside where you can conveniently charge your phone. International power sockets were also installed too.

The bedding and mattresses are like marshmallows in the sky. It felt so comfortable to sleep on it. I love snuggling under the warm covers on the super comfy beds. This would guarantee you a good night’s sleep. A good comfy bed is a must for hotels or resorts because the sole purpose of booking into a hotel for a room is for us to sleep and rest.

After checking in, we had our lunch at TIIGO restaurant which is not too far away from our rooms. This restaurant serves really good western dishes like pasta and pizzas. They also offer traditional Balinese dishes like Babi Guling (suckling pig with rice) , Ayam Betutu( Balinese spring chicken with rice) and Bebek Goreng (Balinese crispy duck with rice). I personally love their Squid ink pasta which I had it on my third day for my dinner, just before I leave for the airport.

The TIIGO restaurant is beautiful and I think it makes a great event space especially for weddings because the whole place made use of natural lighting to light up the space.

I had Babi Guling which is suckling pig cooked with Balinese spices served with steam rice. It’s one of the popular signature Balinese dishes here in Bali. You have to try it if you are in Bali.

For desserts, we had the Tiigo desert platter which is an assortment of bite-sized tarte tartin, tiramisu, carrot cake and lemongrass creme caramel. Good things in life come in small bite-size which are just sufficient to satiate our appetite. We spent the rest of the day doing some filming in the room and then explore the area near Montigo on foot.

We woke up with a great appetite for breakfast for a long and enjoyable sleep in bed. We get to order our breakfast items from the a la carte menu which features western breakfast dishes like egg benedicts and scrambled eggs with bacon. There’s also a list of traditional Balinese dishes to choose from for breakfast. To spoil you further, they also have a small buffet section where you can get some warm porridge, sushi, fruits, yoghurt drinks and salad.

We also did a short tour at Montigo Spa on our first day to check out the spa treatments. Because we love the atmosphere so much, we decided to have our facial and body massage there. I recommend their aromatherapy body massage which uses premium oils mixed with grapeseed oil. This body massage treatment includes a foot bath too.We also tried their traditional Balinese facial which was pretty impressive! Unlike the facial treatments we do in Singapore, the facials here uses natural ingredients and does not have the extraction step. It starts off with a gentle exfoliation using yoghurt and grounded candlenuts as a scrub. During the cleansing step, they would use pure cucumber juice which helps to soothe the skin. For our mask, they use egg white with avocado which helps to tighten and lift the skin. The egg white really helps to tighten the pores and made my skin feel so smooth. I am going to have to try using egg white as a mask at home!

The weather was a little warm while we are there so we like to dip ourselves in the pool especially in the morning when the sun is not fully out yet. The pool water doesn’t seem to be chlorinated at all because to me, it tasted like mineral water. Thus, it isn’t too drying for the hair or skin and it feels so good to be soaking and swimming in clean waters without chemicals.

There are many restaurants along the streets of Seminyak but we still prefer to dine at TIIGO because we truly enjoy the food served there. For dinner, we dined by the pool. You could have done so while swimming in the pool in your swimwear. It would be really cool to be chilling out at the pool with some food and drinks.

My friend, Xue Ying, love their Alio Oglio which is made vegetarian just for her.

On our very last day, we took up a baking class at TIIGO restaurant, under the tutelage of sous chef! We baked chocolate sponge cake with chocolate ganache.Mmm…

IMG_1303
They also offer Balinese cooking classes which are highly recommended since their class size is usually smaller so you can get more attention from the chef.
We even brought our chocolate cakes back to Singapore!

It just so happened that it was the first day of the Galungan festival on the day we were about to leave for Singapore. Although we did not get to see the festive processions and ceremonies held at the streets during the day, we visited the temple to observe the locals as they carry out their routine of  morning prayers at the temple.

We didn’t have much to do cafe hopping in Bali but we did manage to find one vegan cafe which we totally think that it’s worth checking out especially when it gets quite crowded during the day. It is about 10 minutes walk from Montigo, located along Jalan Petitenget. It serves mainly healthy superfoods like smoothie bowls, salads, wraps and sandwiches. Their smoothie bowls are totally instagrammable and I love it!
