Lean Bento: Healthy Eating at Holland Village

Untitled

There is no lack of healthy green cafes in Singapore these days which advocate eating portioned whole foods. Prices are usually quite reasonable too and the food is nonetheless more delicious as compared to popular cafe food. I much rather spend my buck on simple and clean food than to spend on fancy cafes or restaurant food which are often overpriced. The cafe scene here in Singapore is booming but I find that the newer cafes aren’t churning out food of good standard and food bloggers, on the other hand, are causing this instagram-worthy hype of delicious-looking food without revealing what’s the truth behind all these food. I was having lunch at this over-hyped cafe at Seletar area and I was shocked to see how much food was left uneaten and wasted. It does seem like all these instagrammable food is spurring this trend of food wastage. Or maybe the food is not really up to standard?

Back to clean food, we decided to try Lean Bento at their Ghim Moh outlet which is opened daily. There aren’t many health food cafes that open on Sundays but thankfully, we were able to head there for lunch after church. It is located a road right across Buona Vista MRT, at Block 43 along Holland Drive.

Their menu features fixed bento sets for you to choose from but if you would prefer to customized the bento on your own, you may do so as well. You will be asked to select a main (protein-based), some sides and carbs. The only vegetarian and vegan option here is Tempeh.

The cafe is not crowded at all on a weekend and it’s great because the weekend crowd can sometimes just worsen your cafe experience.

Lean Bento stays true to their ‘eat clean’ belief by offering coconut sugar and coconut nectar as a natural source of sweetener at their cafe.

My partner ordered salmon with eggs, sweet potato and salad while I had honey tempeh with couscous, truffle edamame beans, sweet corn and some salad.

It is a well-balanced meal with nutrients from the 3 food groups. The portion sizes were perfect too – not too little or overwhelmingly huge.

We felt great after completing our meal and natural foods should make you feel this way. It should feel you up yet providing you with sufficient energy to power you through the day. It shouldn’t make you feel lethargic or hyper like you’re on a sugar overdose.

It is definitely worth coming back again. They do island-wide deliveries too so you can enjoy them at your offices or at the comfort of your home.

If you are craving for something sweet after your meal, I would recommend you to drop by Haakon or Project Acai for some Acai bowl which comes with fresh fruits and seeds.

Both acai bowls tasted great but we preferred the one at Project Acai as it tasted a little sweeter. If you prefer the less sweet version, you should try the one offered at Haakon.

It’s a good way to end off your healthy meal with a superfood that is loaded with fiber to help with your digestion.
