Tulipmania 2017: Something’s Bloomin’ At The Flower Dome

The month of May is an exciting month for me as it’s a month of celebrations. Birthdays, anniversaries and it’s also the start of summer where sunlight paints the flower fields gold. Even in Singapore, we have our very own version of ‘flower fields’ right here at the Flower Dome. This year’s Tulipmania at Gardens By The Bay is a yearly affair not to be missed. I dare say that it is one of the best floral displays at the Flower Dome since my first visit to the flower dome. More than 100 varieties of tulips and hyacinths, including Darwin hybrid tulips which are often appreciated for their large blooms, will be on display. And it’s not just about the tulips but the overall displays of the flowers.

One thing for sure, the flowers looked healthier and brimming with life this time. On my previous visits to the dome, we noticed that many flower and plant species can’t seem to thrive well even under controlled conditions. The flowers didn’t wilt so easily this time round as I believe that the newly-installed mini plant lamps, which installed among the plants, is the reason why these plants are not thriving.

Instead of just simply introducing the tulip species, Gardens by the Bay takes inspiration from one of the Netherland’s most celebrated artists, Vincent van Gogh that added a cultural factor to Tulipmania. The Flower Dome was transformed into a floral gallery where Van Gogh’s self-portrait and famous art piece “The Starry Night” come to life amidst the vibrant hues of tulips. You could see that a lot of thought has been put into designing the floral landscape within the flower dome. I discovered that there were several new flower species which were not found there before. Certain areas within in the dome have been expanded to include more plant varieties. There are now 8 different zones for us to explore!

These new flower varieties give us a reason for us to come back to admire the beauty of nature.

Good job, Gardens By The Bay!
