Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with Mooncakes from Shang Palace

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 4th of October this year and the main highlight of this Chinese festival would be the exquisite mooncakes. It’s the next best festival after Chinese New Year because this is the season to savour mooncakes with tea. But this year, Shang Palace at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore presents us with a selection of limited-edition mooncakes which could be paired perfectly with tea, wine, cocktails and even beer.

We attended the mooncake and drinks pairing session at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore and we were literally over the moon after sipping some of the finest cocktails, tea and sake along with Shang Palace’s delectable mooncakes.

Our first station was the Singlish Craft Beer pairing by Archipelago Brewery (Singapore). This local brewery presented us their newly-lauched beers which were as good as those German beers we’ve tried. The beers have a smooth and clean taste which pairs well with Shang Palace’s mooncakes. We both love the Ki Siao, Brown Ale beer which goes well with the Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk mooncake. The Ki Siao beer has a strong bitter after-taste but what makes it outstanding is that sweet notes of the malt which balances out the bitterness in the beer. It’s a nice contrast of flavours.

We only drink alcohol once in a blue moon. So that evening, we were already ‘leaping over the moon’ after drinking champagne and beer.

Our second station was Saito Sake Pairing where we drank some of the finest sake from Japan which was paired with snow skin mooncakes by Shang Palace. We tried three different types of sake – dry sake, Junmai sake and Jumai Daiginjo sake. These premium sakes were made in Kyoto, Japan. The strong alcoholic punch is there and I might get knocked out if I swallow a gulp of sake. It’s amazing how sake which is made from rice, water and koji mould can arouse your tastebuds.

We finally had a break from alcohol as we moved on to the third station where we tried Monogram Teas with the mooncakes. It’s my favourite station of all the four stations where we really get to taste and appreciate the different notes in the tea.

Monogram tea is under The Gryphon Tea company and I must say that there are one of the most renowned tea companies in Singapore. Their tea blends are exceptional and their Monogram teas were even more mind-blowing.

The three teas we’ve tried are Jasmine Silk Pearls blend with Rose of Ariana, Kashmere blend with Saffronais and Milky Oolong. Each of the teas really enhances the sweetness and flavours of the mooncake. I must say that the Kashmere blend with Saffronais paired so well with the savoury mixed nuts with Chicken sausage ham mooncake. Yes, mooncakes with meat!

Local Crafted Cocktails Pairing was our last station which was manned by Shangri-La’s own talented bartenders. Their Asian-inspired cocktail concoction using fresh tropical ingredients were superb. They’ve got the mixed of gin and other ingredients right.

IMG_7776

Diversity is a mix of spiced gin, ginger liqueur, lemon juice, honey, rosemary and orange peel. To me, it’s the best summer drink to have it by the pool.

IMG_7894

The showstopper was Tridric which is a mixed of Gin, ginger infused tea, red dates and tonic water. It paired so well with the red bean and almond mooncake.

And my favourite mooncake? It has got to be the snow skin mooncakes! I love both the Yuzu Bird’s Nest and Chocolate salted toffee. The other classic mooncakes like the Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Quarter Yolk and Red Bean with Almond were very delicious. All of their mooncake varieties are palatable and not too overly sweet.

There are three limited edition Shang Palace gift boxes on offer for sharing or gifting: the Mini Snow Skin Eight Treasures collection, the Mini Eight Treasures collection, and the classic Four Treasures collection. These gift boxes looked so elegant! The boxes are wrapped in handcrafted blush-, celadon- and crimson-hued silk boxes that resemble Imperial jewellery boxes adorned with pearl buttons.

Mid-autumn festival is also a time of year that the moon is at its brightest. And it’s the best time to enjoy mooncakes with some Chinese tea under the moonlight.
