After exercise or working out hard at the gym, it is important to fuel yourself up with some healthy and nutritious food. I came across some gym-goers who would head out for fast food like fried chicken wings and fries which are probably not what your body is craving for. After a good workout, your body actually craves for a healthy balanced meal which contains the right amount of nutrients to help restore your body and build muscles. And other than heading to a salad joint to get your post-gym meals, you enjoy a well-balanced and healthy meal at YOLO. They provide goal-oriented meals which are specifically catered to meet your diet goals.
I like the fact that they really keep their menu simple – with some variety – so that you wouldn’t have to take too much of your time cracking on your head about what to eat. There feature four types of signature dishes – Shape up, Energise, Build and Glow. Besides, they offer healthy salads, wraps, smoothies, refreshers and Acai bowl. If nothing on their menu is to your liking, you can customize your own meal with the selection of the type of protein, sides, topping and sauce.
So if you’re on a diet and trying to lose weight, you could opt for their ‘Shape up‘ meals which are actually low-calorie meals. If you’re aiming to bulk up, their ‘Build‘ meals which are higher in protein will help you to reach your strength and conditioning goals. And say if you’re heading out for much during work and prefer to have something which would leave you feeling sluggish the whole day, then a low-GI meal from the ‘Energise‘ meals would be a great option. They even have vitamin-packed meals from their ‘Glow‘ meals which would help maintain youthfulness and keep your skin looking supple. Each of these meals is designed by their in-house nutritionist.
Like any salad bars, you will just need to indicate your orders on the given order forms and make your payment at the counter.
I plan to shed some kilos, so I opted for a cauliflower ‘fried’ rice with chicken and veggies. I also ordered one of the bestsellers which is their Peranakan veggie curry with brown rice. It seems like all of the dishes there are Asian-inspired so I guess it suits our local tastebuds.
Once it’s ready, the buzzer would go off. They are pretty quick in preparing your meals that come in a wooden bowl.
The seating area gets filled up quite quickly during office lunch hours. But you should be able to get a seat if you wait for a bit. Otherwise, takeaways is always a safe option.
The calories are indicated for each meal, and it is especially useful for those who are calculating and watching their calories.
Peranakan Veggie Curry with Brown Rice and Chicken (620 calories)
(SGD 10.90)
Personally, the portion-size is great for me as I usually like to eat till I’m 70% full. If you’re a big eater, this bowl of rice with chicken might not fill you up. But then again, it is best not to overeat especially after a workout.
Price-wise, I would say that it is slightly on the pricier side. Since food quality and taste-wise works out to be great, I’m not complaining. Though I wish it was made more affordable.
Cauliflower ‘Fried’ Rice with Chicken (300 calories)
(SGD 9.90)
I’m glad I ordered the Cauliflower ‘Fried’ rice with Chicken. The chicken slices are really tender, and they totally nailed it with their cauliflower ‘fried’ rice which is actually baked in the oven. It was tasty, and it tasted a little like our regular Asian fried rice. Cauliflower rice is a great alternative to rice because it is much lower in carbs. You could go vegetarian/vegan with cauliflower ‘fried’ rice by customizing your own meal. It’s a good thing that they offer veggie patty as a protein.
Currently, they only have three different types of smoothies (SGD 6.90 each) – Avocado bombshell, Mixed Berry Bomb and Peanut Butter Chocolate. Their smoothies are pretty good, but Avocado and Peanut Butter Chocolate smoothie are rather rich in taste. Mixed Berry would be a better option. I am hoping they would include more fruit smoothies in time to come.
For me, I would rather skip the smoothie and go with their Acai bowl. You can customize it by choosing your own base, topping and fruits. They kept it really simple and nothing too fancy like the ones you get from Acai shops, but it is nonetheless satisfying. Who doesn’t love Acai?
