Previously, I visited The Communal Place sometime in October of last year for lunch. And this time, I’m back again to try out a couple of their new dishes in their brand new menu which features sharing platters.

Both food and service here are great and it is one of the cafes in Singapore which I would highly recommend you to come for a meal.

They serve western fusion cuisine at reasonable prices and portions are generous. What more could one ask for?

The Communal Place

It’s a little quiet here on weekdays so if you are looking for a quiet spot to chill, study or catch up with some work, The Communal Place is the answer. On weekends, I reckon this cafe along Joo Chiat Road will be filled with brunch crowd goers as this is a perfect setting for families and friends to gather.

Evening Drinks

In the evening, you can head over for some drinks. Their extensive beverage menu will get you covered for the whole evening. They serve alcoholic drinks like wine, shots and cocktails. You can DIY and shake up your own drinks too!

We ordered a refreshing mocktail from their menu but we couldn’t remember what it was called. It is like a lime and cucumber soda drink.

Lychee Rose Tea

My favourite beverage at The Communal Place is their freshly-brewed teas which are served in a small glass cup. The tea leaves are very fragrant and the brewed tea does not have that bitter after taste. This lychee rose tea is another stunning tea blend!

Spicy Flower Clam (New!)

To kick things off, we had this bowl of spicy flower clam dish served with ciabatta toast. There are 3 slices of ciabatta toast that can be dipped in the clam soup stock. We couldn’t really tell whether the toast was coated with butter or garlic butter but anyhow, there were truly delicious.

And the spicy flower clams were amazing! We were told that there are 400 grams of clam in each bowl. There were so many clams in it that we could not finish it all. And the best part? The clam soup stock was sumptuous!

It has all the flavours of the ocean. The sweetness from the clams might have all been transferred to the clear soup-like stock. We drank it like soup and we even dunk our ciabatta toast into it. Heavenly.

This dish actually reminded me of their bouillabaisse, a seafood broth which was also exceptionally good.

Seafood Cream (New!)

Going along with the seafood theme, they have also launched their new seafood pasta dish – Seafood cream. Though it is called seafood cream which suggests that the sauce is very rich and creamy. But thankfully, it isn’t that creamy otherwise you might find it too ‘jelak‘ or overwhelming too rich. The consistency of the pasta sauce is just about right.

The linguine is cooked to al dente and there were pieces of prawns, squids and 3 large mussels that came along with it. It was another satisfying seafood-based dish.

Pull Pork Burger

We have yet to try their burgers so we decided to try dishes from their previous menu. I came across an Instagram post which boast of their must-try Pull Pork burger so we went ahead to order it.

It turns out to be really HUGE. I would consider this to be an American-sized portion. The burger itself was literally overflowing with the juicy pull-pork meat and half of the plate was piled with their hand-cut fries. To make it a balanced meal, it comes with some salad at the side. They also stuffed some coleslaw into the burger. Overall, it was a decent burger but I am not quite digging into this one.

However, I like that they actually made their own fries which are nice, crispy and chunky.

Pancake Tower

Last but not least, we managed to try their Pancake tower on their brunch menu. I previously wanted to try their fluffy-looking pancakes but we did not have the stomach for it. So for desserts, we had their Pancake tower which comprises of 3 thick pancakes topped with strawberries, blueberries and cookie crumble. It also came with a dollop of butter and maple syrup.

In my opinion, they weren’t the best pancakes I’ve tasted. It looks very fluffy and moist on the outside but on the inside, it was quite dry. The butter and maple syrup helps to eradicate the dryness but not quite completely.

Their pancakes had a more cake-like texture which was not quite what I was looking for. My idea of a great pancake is one that is warm, moist, fluffy and fragrant.

And if you want to end your meal with a proper dessert, we highly recommend that you order their Chocolate Dome. It’s the BOMB.

Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable meal. And the spicy flower clams (which was recommended by their staff) truly made my day.

Our recommendations at The Communal Place: Spicy flower clams, Bouillabaisse, Seafood cream, Miso Salmon and Chocolate Dome.

On a side note, they seemed to be excelling in their seafood-based dishes. You get the gist.
