Tucked away in a little corner in the Chan Brothers building along North Bridge Road, COZY is a quaint DIY jewellery shop. It is the kind of place you might walk past without noticing, but once you step inside, you are instantly greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels like home.

The story behind COZY

COZY was started by Thea and Mathilde, two creatives from Denmark who made Singapore their new home about two years ago. Back in their hometown, hands-on, DIY workshops like these are a common affair. Inspired by that same Danish culture of comfort and togetherness, the name COZY reflects the very essence — in Denmark, almost everything meaningful is described as ‘cozy’ — from a dinner with friends to quiet time at home.

The workshop space itself is a breath of fresh air. With its high ceilings, simple decor, and Danish-inspired design touches — with the posters on the wall brought in from Denmark, curated furniture pieces, and dainty trinkets — the studio is simple and soul-soothing. True to its name, COZY serves as a cosy space for you to unwind, let your creative juices flow and create one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces for yourself or your loved ones.

Finding Your Way To COZY

COZY might just be a little difficult to find as it is located inside a building instead of along the road like a shophouse. Follow this guide to make sure you don’t get lost!

Step 1: Make your way to the Chan Brothers building.

Step 2: Once you are up the stairs, walk straight. You should see Hong Kong Street running parallel on your left.

Step 3: Within a few steps, you should see a little staircase on your right leading up. Take the stairs and enter the door.

Step 4: Once you are in the building, turn left and you should see COZY. If needed, the restroom is located right outside COZY.

How much is the DIY jewelry workshop?

At COZY, you can take your pick from various jewellery pieces — bracelets ($45), necklaces ($55), hoop or hooked earrings ($49), anklets ($49), and even elastic cord ($35). The costs includes the use of their tools, glass beads and other materials required to make your jewelery. You can check out the pricelist here too.

Choosing your jewelry base

After deciding on the type of jewellery you want to create, you can then choose between 925 sterling silver or gold-plated 925 sterling silver as your base. All of their materials are carefully selected to ensure the highest standards. They are 100% nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Hence, everyone can wear their jewelry without worrying about allergic reactions.

Your DIY Jewelry kit

Once you have chosen your base, you will be handed a set of tools and materials to make your very own jewelry. I have chosen the 925 sterling silver as my base.

The instructions are printed out for you, so you can get on with DIY-ing your jewelry. Their staff will come around to check on you once in a while, but do sound out if you need additional help with any of the steps.

The price for the jewellery you would be making includes all the essential materials and tools, including the delightful array of colourful glass beads which are stored in the clear trays.

Picking the beads

There are over 100 different beads, gemstones, pearls and charms to choose from! The base price only includes the use of their glass beads which are available in various colours and designs.

The glass beads are neatly arranged and sorted according to colour. There is no limit as to how many beads you can use so you can take as many as you need for your own jewelry.

Tip: We suggest coming prepared with something you already have in mind, as the wide selection of beads can be slightly overwhelming if you don’t have any idea on what your final product might look like. It is also good to decide the beading patterns, arrangements of the beads, and the length of your jewellery. This is because if you are not satisfied with the final design, you might need to take out all the beads and redo from the beginning.

Additionally, you can opt for pearls, gemstones, or fun kids’ beads to elevate your jewellery further. Such beads requires an additional top-ups to the base price. You can load up as many gems you think you would need first. The final cost will only be calculated with the materials you actually use at the end of the whole DIY session.

Once you have assembled all your materials, it is time to get creative!

Making the Jewelry

The beads are really small, so you would definitely need to practice your fine motor skills and a little bit of patience to get things going. A nifty trick would be to use the wire to pick up the beads!

Once you are done creating your jewellery, you can just leave your unused materials on the table for the staff to clear it up later. They even provide a jewelry pouch for you to keep your trinket.

Jewelry Care and maintenance

While the pieces are water-resistant, it is still recommended to remove them before showering, as silver naturally tarnishes over time. But don’t worry, a little polishing will bring back its original shine.
