Hueplay Studio offers a serene, art-filled sanctuary where you can press pause on the outside noise and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones. They offer a space where you can do tufting, art jamming and more.
Nestled right in the heart of the city at Orchard Central, this minimalist creative space invites you to unwind, create, and simply be with the gentle guidance of a friendly team.
Hueplay studio’s interior
One of the first things you will notice in Hueplay Studio is the eye-catching wall of yarn, beautifully arranged by colour. The studio is equipped with spacious tables, giving you all the room you need to work comfortably on your crafts.
Around the space, completed tufted rugs are displayed as inspiration, helping you visualise what your own creation could look like. The studio’s organised jumble adds to its charm, making it feel like a safe, casual space where you can fully embrace the creative process. On the side, there is a small selection of collectibles.
What do they offer?
At Hueplay Studio, creativity takes centre stage with a variety of engaging art jamming activities to choose from. You can try your hand at tufting (from $88 for 1.5 hours) or needle punching ($58 for 3 hours) — both perfect for those who love working with textures and colours.
For something playful and fun, Hueplay Studio also offers figurine painting ($28 for 2 hours) and Singapore’s first glow-in-the-dark painting session ($55 for 3 hours), done under UV lights.
Punch Needle Workshop
We decided to try our hands at needle punching, which was easy to pick up even as beginners. You will be provided with all the necessary materials, including over 20 colours of yarn and a 9.5cm x 9.5cm cut of monk’s cloth to work with. We were 3 hours to work with the materials provided.
Step 1: Choose Your Design
You will first be provided with a piece of paper with a circle. You can hand draw your own design within the circle or pick from a pile of pre-drawn designs. We took our picks from the pre-drawn designs as we found what we wanted in there.
Step 2: Trace Your Design
After deciding on your design, you then have to trace the design on the monk’s cloth using a permanent marker. Place your paper design on the thin board that lights up, and your cloth over it. You should be able to see the design through the cloth with the back light from the board. If not, sound out to the staff and they can help you turn off the lights in the studio so that it is more visible.
Step 3: Choose Your Yarn
Once you are done tracing, take your pick from the yarn trolley. If you have chosen a design from the pre-drawn pile and are unsure of the colours, you could search the image up for reference.
Step 4: Needle Punching
The staff will then guide you on how to needle punch. The steps are relatively simple and we got the hang of it within a couple of tries. The process was therapeutic and you can work independently while talking to friends. The freedom to undo and redo stitches also made the process feel really stress-free. You can reach out to the staff as well if you face any problems.
Step 5: Finishing Up
Once you are completed, you can pass your needle punch embroidery to the staff who will help you glue the threads at the back. Our 3 hour session flew by, and we comfortably wrapped up in about 2.5 hours.
Our Verdict
Overall, Hueplay Studio is a lovely spot to unwind and get creative, whether you are a total beginner or someone looking to try a new hobby. While the prices are slightly on the higher end, the friendly staff, central location and fun crafts make the experience worth it. Plus, the ability to undo and redo your work in the needle punching and tufting workshops takes a lot of pressure off — making it one of the more beginner-friendly crafts we have tried. You can use your needle punch embroidery as a coaster, or simply just as decoration.
The instructors were friendly and approachable, providing clear verbal instructions and demonstrations before giving us the freedom to try things on our own. Their supportive yet hands-off approach created a relaxed, self-paced learning environment with just the right amount of guidance. I
