Shang Hao Kopi's Taiwanese Breakfast Shop Far East Square Amoy Street

You can now get authentic Taiwanese Breakfast in Far East Square! There’s a new Taiwanese eatery called Shang Hao Kopi at Far East Square serves up affordable Taiwanese comfort food alongside traditional Singaporean drinks. Their little quaint breakfast shop is located right across the popular salad shop, Six Hands.

Why ‘Shang Hao’?

The name ‘Shang Hao’ (尚好) translates to ‘The Best’ in Hokkien. It symbolises the brand’s commitment to quality and authenticity at great value. At Shang Hao Kopi, their goal is to help nourish one’s body and soul with dishes that evoke nostalgia and warmth. To me, it is like enjoying a bowl of hearty bento or noodles that tastes like homecooked food. And I think they had achieved what they set out to do because their dishes does evoke nostalgia and reminded me of my grandma’s cooking.

A little quaint eatery at Far East Square

There are limited seats and tables available at the eatery so it is best to do takeaways. There 4 small tables with tools. It is not the most comfortable seating area as the place is rather small. Hence, it is recommended that you order at the kiosk and pack the food away to enjoy at your office.

What’s on the menu?

Let’s start with the drink menu. They offer house-made soya milk (from $1.80), coffee (from $1.60) and cold drinks like iced lemon tea and homemade sour plum drink. Their soya milk is made daily in their kitchen using non-GMO soybeans sourced from Heilongjiang in Dongbei, chosen for its sweet and malty flavour.

On their menu, they have Taiwanese Egg Crepe Roll (from $3.90), Taiwanese Rice Dumplings (from $3.90), noodles (from $3.90), soba (from $3.90), rice bento (from $7.90), sides and desserts ($5.80 each).

Most of the food items are priced under $10 and all prices are nett. I mean where else can you enjoy a bowl of noodles at $3.90 in CBD?

I ordered quite a number of their dishes to try but unfortunately, I did not get to try their rice dumplings today because it was all sold out. Their rice dumplings (or fan tuan) is made glutinous rice and then filled with crispy You Tiao, egg, and savoury toppings. This combination sounds legit good and no wonder they were all sold out.

Taiwanese Egg Crepe Roll ($3.90)

The Classic Taiwanese Egg Crepe Roll (original) ($3.90) is like an crepe roll stuffed with a soft, pan-fried egg, doused with their signature sauce. The egg crepe roll is pretty thin and small but tasty. And it tasted even better with their housemade chilli.

There are other crepe roll options like like Chicken Floss ($4.90), Kimchi ($4.90), Ham & Cheese ($5.90), and Grilled Pork ($5.90) which are probably more filling at the original one.

Night Market Hot Plate Noodle (from $3.90)

I expected the portion to be small for the noodles but no – the portion was substantial. You can choose between black pepper or tomato base for the noodles. I went with black pepper because anything with black pepper is lit. This is actually pasta served with an egg and pickled vegetables at the side. I would not mind eating this for lunch everyday. It is a simple and comforting meal to have for lunch which is not too heavy.

You can also enjoy the noodles with grilled chicken chop or chicken leg for an additional $4.

Traditional Taiwan Railway Ekiben (TR Bento) ($7.90 each)

This is Shang Hao Kopi’s modern take on Taiwan’s beloved railway bento. You can choose Braised Pork Belly Rice, Grilled Pork Chop Rice or Grilled Chicken Leg Rice. Each bento served with fragrant rice, pickles and a sunny-side egg.

I had their Braised Pork Belly Rice which comes with a thick slice of braised pork that is tasty. It does not have that melt-in-your-mouth texture but the taste and flavour of it is decent. The pickled vegetables actually help balance the dish. Its slight acidity help offset the fattiness of the pork belly.

The Steamed Snapper Fillet Rice ($11.90) offers a wholesome option for those seeking something lighteryet equally satisfying. This is probably the only dish on their menu which costs over $10.

Grilled Pork Chop Cold Soba ($7.90)

They also offer both cold and hot soba which you can pair with proteins like grilled chicken chop, grilled pork or grilled snapper. The grilled pork is also a great option as the meat is pretty tender.

Their cold soba dishes come with an egg and a choice of dashi soy or creamy seasame sauce dip which you can mix into their soba noodles. This another good lunch option to enjoy if you want something light.

My Verdict

If you are looking for affordable meal options in the CBD, you must make a pit-stop at Shang Hao Kopi’s to try their egg crepe rolls and hearty bentos. Food is decent and the price is simply too attractive.
