[Review] rumeL is Singapore’s Cheapest Sourdough Pizza but is it worth a try?

rumeL soudough neapolitan-style pizza

Neapolitan-style sourdough pizza has been all the hype lately. A newly opened pizza spot in Singapore, rumeL, serves up pizzas that cost below $20 – making it possibly the most affordable sourdough pizza you can find right now.

Their fan favourites feature the Beef Bolognese Pizza, Hot Honey Cheese Pizza, and the Mozza B.L.T Pizza. They also offer coffee, matcha lattes and other drinks too. Over here, they serve 2 sizes of pizzas: 6-inch and 10-inch while most other pizza restaurants serve 12-inch pizzas. I guess if you want to indulge in pizzas but do not want to overeat, rumeL’s small sized pizzas maybe an option.

How to find rumeL

Located conveniently on Level 1 of Bugis+ right next to the escalator within the mall, rumeL is hard to miss – and even harder to resist if you’re craving a quick and easy meal.

The vibe is casual, jungle-themed, and nostalgic, almost like stepping back to a kid’s birthday party – fun, light-hearted, and a little cheeky. The space is compact, seating around 30 diners at full capacity.

Designed to run like a fast food-style pizza joint, the service is quick and fuss-free, making it perfect for a grab-and-go lunch or a relaxed catch-up with friends. Seating is limited so it is best to do takeways here.

Story behind rumeL

Behind rumeL’s impressive pizza lineup is a powerhouse collaboration between Hersing Culinary and Silvo Gropelli, Australia’s number one pizza chef. Born and raised in Sicily, Gropelli brings with him a deep-rooted Italian pizza tradition, combined with years of international acclaim – he was ranked No.1 in 50 Top Pizza Australia, No.5 in 50 Top Pizza Asia Pacific, and recognised in the prestigious 50 Top Pizza World 2024 list. With all those accolades, we had set high expectations for rumeL pizzas.

Fun fact: rumeL is Lemur spelled backwards – fitting, since the quirky lemur is also the store’s mascot. During our visit, we caught a short performance by their robotic lemur. It struck a few playful poses, which added a light-hearted, entertaining touch to the experience.

What’s on the menu?

Let’s start with the drinks.

Drinks

For a better pick-me-up, we recommend rumeL’s artisanal coffee brews, crafted using beans roasted by Harry Ko, the De’Longhi Australian Brewers Cup Champion 2022 and a two-time Cup Tasters winner. Specially blended for the Singapore palate, the beans are roasted in Australia and airflown in, resulting in a cup that is well-balanced and layered with notes of milk chocolate, berries, and hazelnut nougat. The coffee we tried is pretty decent.

While we didn’t get to try everything on the menu, unique drinks like the Salted Caramel White Coffee, Brulee Brew, and the range of Sparkling Teas definitely caught our eye. For those who prefer a stronger, local-style brew, rumeL also offers traditional kopi made with Asian-style robusta beans from a local roastery – a thoughtful touch that bridges new-wave coffee with familiar local favourites.

We tried the Iced Matcha Latte ($5), which came with a lovely presentation – frothy, layered, and Instagram-ready. Unfortunately, the taste didn’t quite match up; it leaned more towards a powdery, instant matcha flavour. Try their coffee instead.

Mushroom Soup ($3.80)

The mushroom soup was served piping hot, though it tasted kind of instant. It tasted just like any other regular mushroom soup. That said, it doubles up decently as a dip for the sourdough crust, especially if it starts to feel a bit dry.

Sourdough Neapolitan-style Pizzas

Gropelli created a special in-house pizza dough recipe, with a 48-hour naturally fermented sourdough crust that is light, airy, and delightfully chewy. All tomatoes used in the pizzas’ sauces as well as cheeses for their toppings are imported from Italy.

There is a glass window to the open kitchen where you can catch a glimpse of the chef hand-prepping your pizza from scratch.

At rumeL, the 6-inch pizzas are served fresh and hot on playful party-style disposable paper plates, adding to the fun, laidback vibe of the space.

We tasted a few of their 6-inch pizzas, which are roughly the size of a palm – or even smaller – and each slice could be inhaled in a bite. Don’t expect to feel full from just one 6-inch pizza. They are better suited for sharing especially if you want to try a few flavours.

Because of the compact size, the pizzas tend to have a 1:1 ratio of toppings to crust, especially with the thicker sourdough base – so you will get one bite with toppings, and the next, just crust. We found ourselves wishing for bigger slices, and the larger 10-inch version might strike a better balance.

Mozza B.L.T Pizza (6-inch) ($7.80)

You can’t go wrong with the Mozza B.L.T Pizza – the perfect combination of juicy tomatoes, smoky bacon, drizzled with slightly sweet honey mayo on top. It is a solid go-to option if you are craving a familiar, satisfying pizza flavour.

Beef Bolognese Pizza (6-inch) ($6.80)

The Beef Bolognese Pizza is slightly tangy and creamy, with flavours that come together well. Made with beef bolognese, mozzarella, onions, and a mint yoghurt drizzle, it is easy to see why this one is a fan favourite.

Hot Honey Cheese Pizza (6-inch) ($6.80)

The Hot Honey Cheese Pizza was the table’s favourite, and we can see it becoming a hit with local tastebuds. It strikes a great balance of sweet and savoury, with cheddar, mozzarella, and a mildly spicy hot honey drizzle that work together beautifully. The heat is very subtle – so even if you’re spice-sensitive, there is no need to worry.

Carbonara Pizza (6-inch) ($8.80)

Imagine Carbonara pasta on a pizza, with Carbonara sauce, mozzarella, crispy bacon, and a runny egg on top. The Carbonara Pizza was a bit messy to eat, with the egg adding to the overall creaminess. It reminded us of a richer, creamier version of the Mozza B.L.T Pizza.

Wild Mushroom Pizza (6-inch) ($8.80)

This one’s definitely for the mushroom lovers – the earthy flavour really comes through, even more so than the mushroom soup. This pizza is simple and straightforward, but it hits the point with its bold, unmistakable mushroom profile.

Kaya Butter Pizza (6-inch) ($6.80)

rumeL soudough neapolitan-style pizza

The Kaya Butter Pizza is definitely the first of its kind – a bold and unique take on Singapore’s signature breakfast, reimagined as pizza. A generous layer of kaya is slathered on the dough and baked, with a thin slice of butter placed on top after it comes out of the oven. Be sure to eat it while it’s hot, as the butter melts quickly. You can order it with a side of soft boiled eggs and dip it into the eggs too.

Personally, we felt the kaya-on-pizza fusion didn’t quite hit the mark, though it is an interesting attempt to infuse local flavours into something new.

Strawberry Panna Cotta ($3.80)

The strawberry jam was aromatic but leaned too sweet for our taste. For a better balance, dig a little deeper into the Panna Cotta – there is a mild vanilla taste that cuts through the sweetness.

ALL DAY PIZZAS

There are the pricing for the ALL DAY pizzas which are available in two sizes. There’s a price difference of $3 between the 6-inch and 10-inch pizzas.

Margherita ($7.80 for 6-inch, $9.80 for 10-inch)

Verdict

Overall, rumeL makes for a laidback, fuss-free spot for a quick bite. Service was efficient, and while the prices may seem surprisingly affordable, the portion sizes, especially the 6-inch pizzas – felt too fun-sized for a full meal.

We have tasted better pizzas in Singapore but for sourdough pizzas at this pricing, we would say it’s still relatively more affordable than most pizza spots. The crust is slightly chewy but not as airy or puffy as gourmet artisanal-standard pizzas.

Although these 6-inch pizzas cost below $10 each, you probably would not feel satisfied after consuming one. Instead, you might want to get the 10-inch pizzas (which is $3 more expensive) to share with your dining partners. For young kids, the 6-inch pizzas are the perfect size for them. It’s probably only worth a try if you just need a quick bite.

Do keep in mind that seating is quite limited, though the traffic should move quite fast during peak hours.
