A new cosy cafe called romme. has just sprung up in the neighbourhoods near City Square Mall. The owner, Dilys opened this cafe to fulfill a dream of starting a F&B business and working in the kitchen. They offer Korean-inspired menu which includes coffee, matchas, sandwiches, housemade pastas and desserts.

This cafe isn’t too difficult to locate. You can walk out of Farrer Park MRT station via Exit H and simply walk towards the road, behind the carpark of the mall. You will be able to spot an alley of shops and there’s where romme. is nestled at.
I had a brief chat with the Dilys who revealed that their cafe ‘romme’ was inspired by the Norwegian word, rommem which means to accomodate. I guess it is also in line with what she envision the cafe to be – a place to hold and accomodate people.
The Interior

The owner wanted to create a homely cafe that makes you feel like you are chilling right at home. I guess that explain why there’s a long communal dining table. The cosy warm lightings, muted colour scheme and cream-coloured armchairs gives off a calming and welcome vibe.

Small simple touches like complimentary water for customers to help themselves to, is always a plus point. The prices on the menu are also inclusive of GST charges. So customers will just need to fork out an additional 10% service charge.
Currently, they are in the process of applying to be a CDC merchant. So you might be able to use your CDC vouchers here once they got the green light.
What’s on their menu?

There’s a breakfast and brunch menu offered here. They might extend their operating hours in future.
They are known for their house-baked Italian flat bread – foccacia bread. Their specialties include Earl Grey Matcha Latte, Foccacia Sandwiches and Waffles. Most would drop by for their drinks and sandwiches. But if you have room for desserts, I highly recommend you to try their waffles too.

Drinks

Besides black and white coffee, they offer Misugaru latte, Einspanner and Biscoff Latte. They also offer popular matcha latte combos like Strawberry Matcha latte and Mango Matcha Latte. A quick glance of the Google reviews would reveal that the best-selling drink is their Earl Grey Matcha Latte.
If you are not a fan of their matcha drink, you can try their chocolate drinks like Earl Grey Chocolate, Sparkling teas and green juice.
Earl Grey Matcha Latte ($8+)

This is such a well-made and well-balanced matcha latte in my opinion. The Earl Grey Matcha latte is topped with Earl Grey-infused sweet cream so you can immediately taste the Earl Grey tea fragrance the moment you sip the drink. The matcha flavour comes through right after the tea notes but it is not as strong.
Nonetheless, it is a pleasant drink and I unknowingly finished the drink within 30 minutes. That’s how good it is.
Einspanner ($7+)

The drink looks great as well but it isn’t as well-balanced as their Earl Grey Matcha Latte. I am not too sure exactly why but the black coffee doesn’t pair well with the layer of cold sweet cream. I am not too sure if because the coffee is too diluted or not strong enough. But something seems off and the drink formula isn’t the best.
“You’ve got beef” sammies ($18+)

Their sandwich filling is smashing good. The combo of beef bulgogi, housemade kimchi jam, argula and melted mozzarella hits real hard. Sandwiching all these ingredients together is their fluffy soft homemade foccacia. I was expecting the foccacia to have a hint of rosemary but I found none. Though the bread is soft, it was rather plain. I kind of wish that the bread has an added herb flavour to it.
Other than that, it was a really good sandwich. But for $18, I would expect the sandwich to be a little bigger or maybe throwing in some fries or salad at the side to make it a meal would have been great.
They have 3 other sandwich variants to choose from but I went with their beef sandwich as this was a sandwich recommended by other Google reviewers.
Steak and Rose Pasta ($24+)

There are 5 pastas to choose from and I went with their popular ‘Steak and Rose’ pasta which comprises of ribeye steak, tomato cream sauce, cherry tomatoes, garlic, onions and spaghetti. I was surprised to know that they actually made their own pasta in the kitchen.
The beef slices were cooked to medium doneness and they were pretty tender. The pasta was quite tasty but I just wish that it has a little more sauce so that it is not too dry. But overall, I would say it’s a decent plate of pasta to have for lunch.

Berry Me Waffles ($15+)

Now what caught me off guard is actually their belgian waffles. I was expecting it to be this good. To me, this was better than their foccacia sandwiches. Their waffles are so soft and fluffy. And I don’t think I have ever came across a place that offers housemade waffles that tastes so heavenly. The simple combination of caramelised bananas, berries, sweet cloud foam and maple syrup is everything. This waffles will probably be lingering in my brain for quite a while because I am still craving for this waffle as I am writing this post.

Just look at the waffle interior! I hope their waffles remain consistently good so that you will be able to witness and taste how great it was. Please tag me at @deeniseglitz on Instagram with a photo if you happen to experience this gastronomic moment at the cafe. If they fail to do so, just tag me as well to prove me wrong.
Verdict

This is where you should be spending your CDC vouchers at once they become a merchant. Give them a couple more months and swing by here with your foodie friends or family.
I will be back for their matcha latte, belgian waffles and maybe a sandwich.
