Jo:Hwa Hair & Living Korean Hair Salon: I tried the famous Korean Head Spa treatment in Singapore

Jo:Hwa Hair & Living Korea Head Spa

You probably would have seen videos of Korean head spa treatment with the waterfall treatment that rains water down your scalp on social media platforms. Watching those videos just reminded me that to take carve out some time to pamper myself and experience such relaxing treatments for myself too. I have tried such treatments before but I felt that the hair and scalp steps weren’t very thorough. However, here at Jo:Hwa Hair & Living, I would say it is a different story altogether. There’s a reason why they are able to maintain their 5-star rating on Google.

Visiting Jo:Hwa Hair & Living at Capitol Singapore

This Korean-owned hair salon is made popular by influencers who promoted their head spa treatments. It is located within Capitol Kempinski, facing the main road. It’s located close to a bus stop along Stamford Road.

The founders Jun Park and Jacob Kim are hairstylists themselves and they do provide hair services to customers as well. The 70-minute Korean Head Spa treatment which I tried was done personally by Jacob.

The Interior

The hair studio had a Hanok-themed interior which brought out the spirit of traditional Korean architecture. It evokes a warm and homely vibe. They recently created a new private space specially for the Head Spa treatments.

There are a few Head spa treatment cubicles which are newly refurbished with dressing tables and treatment beds. I was ushered to the couple room where you can actually do the head spa treatment together with your partner, friend or family members.

The treatment room was quite spacious and you can definitely enjoy the head spa treatment in privacy.

The blow drying and styling of hair would be done in the same treatment room as well.

And before the treatment, you will be given a set of clothes (Top and shorts) to change into. They provide bedroom slippers too. It’s just like going for an actual full body spa treatment.

Chapter Three: Living (70-min Head Spa + 20 min Blow Dry and style)

The 70-min Head Spa treatment involves head, shoulder and back massage so it would alot more comfortable for you to wear their spa clothes.

They offer 3 types of head spa treatments: 25-min Head Spa ($150), 50-min Head Spa ($250) and 70-min Head Spa. This treatment is priced at $350 and it is the most intensive scalp treatment.

Before lying down on the treatment bed, they will perform a scalp analysis by scanning your scalp and finding out your current scalp condition.

I knew my scalp wasn’t the healthiest. The pores are clogged with dead skin cells and sebum. It was also interesting to know that my scalp appears yellowish because of scalp aging. That was something new to me and I believe that the constant exposure to harsh UV rays could be the cause of it. Looks like I have to wear a cap out the next time. Is that the reason why founder Jacob was wearing a cap, even in the salon?

The Head Spa Process

There were a total of 18 steps involved and I was wide awake throughout partly because they played the oceanic waves which is suppose to calm you down but it sounded like planes roaring through the sky. That ASMR sounds kept me awake but relaxed.

During the treatment, they added scalp products which helps soften and cleanse the buildup that clogs the hair follicles. One of the products gives the scalp a tingling and minty sensation.

The scalp treatment step was quite straightforward as they apply various scalp tonics and treatment lotions to cleanse the scalp. This is followed by steaming of the hair and scalp and then shampooing. The main highlight of the treatment is actually the massages using hot compressions to improve blood circulation.

The treatment also includes a thorough massage which includes to the scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back. There’s also a brief leg massage which really help eases the body. They also use a hot stone and hot towels to warm the body and increase blood circulation around the head and shoulders.

After the full treatment (which exceeded slightly for me), they serve their house-brewed tea with some light snacks. Then they blow dry my hair and style my hair briefly. Then Jacob did another scalp analysis for me.

The follicles are somewhat looking alot more cleaner than before but of course, not all the pores are fully cleansed as this would require a few more scalp treatment sessions to cleanse the follicles further. But overall, I was satisfied with the overall experience. To me, the most important thing is that my scalp is now ‘cleaner’ than before.

My Verdict

Overall, the whole head spa experience was a pleasant one. This would be perfect for anyone who enjoys massage therapy. The head spa session at Jo:Hwa Hair & Living is like a massage therapy with scalp treatment combined into one. For me, the effectiveness of their scalp treatment is more important than the overall wellness aspect of it. So intead of opting for the 70-min Head Spa, I would have probably gone for the 25-min Head Spa session instead.
