RAPPU: Hip-Hop Vibes, Neon Lights, and Handrolls That Hit Hard

Sushi, sake, and sick beats. That’s the RAPPU experience in a nutshell! This handroll and sake joint is anything but traditional, so expect neon lighting, high-tension rap/hip-hop tracks, and handrolls so stuffed you can barely eat them in one bite. It’s the kind of place where dinner feels more like a party, perfect for nights out with friends or casual dates when you want a dining experience that’s fun and bold.

The Space & Vibe

RAPPU feels like a cross between a sushi bar and a late-night lounge. Long counters stretch across the room so you can watch your handrolls crafted fresh in front of you, while the neon glow and hip-hop soundtrack set an energy that’s fun, lively, and unapologetically modern. It’s not your typically zen sushi bar, and that’s the point. You come here for sushi with a vibe.

What’s on the menu?

RAPPU offers a diverse menu built on its three pillars: high-quality seaweed, rice, and the freshest seafood. They offer lunch sets, seasonal items, hot and cold izakaya dishes, and are most well-known for their handrolls. For drinks, they’ve got you covered with everything from beer to cocktails and, of course, sake. The sake list is broad, leaning towards easy-drinking, refreshing, and food-friendly options.

Notable picks include Dewazakura, a well-regarded brewery known for its crisp, aromatic sakes, and the playful Sakari Yuzu, which brings a citrusy twist.

We tried their September Specials (2 seasonal dishes) as well as the other lunch options like The RAPPU 4 set and Mt. RAPPU don. We also had their Matcha Tiramisu for desserts.

September Specials: Striped Jack (Shima Aji)

September marks peak season for Shima Aji, and RAPPU is spotlighting this prized fish in two seasonal dishes.

Shima Aji Osaka Ya ($24) ⭐ Favourite

A bright, zesty small plate with three clean slices of striped jack dressed in a punchy citrus blend and topped with mustard flower. This ceviche is fresh, sharp, and refreshing – the kind of starter that wakes up your palate.

Shima Aji Handroll ($16)

Shima Aji Handroll

A thick, indulgent roll stuffed with striped jack, mustard flower, and ohkahijiki, all tied together with citrus tare. Wrapped in their crispy nori, it’s fresh, bold, and packs a punch with every bite.

The Rappu 4 ( $18/set)

We tried their signature lunch handroll sets, which all came wrapped in crispy nori and seasoned with a touch of salty soy in the rice that tied everything together. It comes as a set of 4 handrolls of just $18. This lunch special is only available from Tuesdays to Fridays, excluding Public Holidays and eve of Public Holidays.

There are 2 sets which you can choose from: Tengo and Jigo set. There are vegan options available, plus a no-rice (nori cracker) version for those who prefer something even lighter.

Tengo Set: This classic set features ingredients like Akami, Salmon, Toro, and Crab. A safe bet if you want to experience their essentials.

Akami (Lean Tuna)

Jigo Set: This is a spicier, bolder take for those who like stronger flavors. Our favorite was the Jigo Salmon Roll, where the fresh salmon was covered in creamy mentaiko mayonnaise and a light tempura crunch, winning in both taste and texture.

Jigo Salmon Roll

At $6.50 to $8.50 per roll outside of the set, the value for the curated lunch set is hard to beat. The portion is really big as well, with each handroll having just the perfect sashimi-to-rice ratio. Their wasabi is also fresh and the perfect consistency.

Crab Roll from the Jingo Set

The Tengo was easy to eat and a classic choice if you want to try their selection, while the Jigo set added that extra punch. Both are worth trying, depending on your mood!

Mt. RAPPU Series ($21+)Favourite

Salmon & Hotate Don

If you’re not in the mood for handrolls, go big with their signature Mt. RAPPU dons for lunch. They have 2 different options, Salmon & Hotate or the Akami & Toro. Rice bowls piled high with premium sashimi and topped with an oozy Japanese egg yolk.

Salmon & Hotate Don

We tried the Salmon & Hotate Don, and they were really generous with the portion. So indulgent, flavorful, and very shareable. The crispy lotus root chips on the side added texture, while the accompanying miso soup rounded everything off perfectly. Definitely a filling option if you’re hungry for lunch.

Matcha Tiramisu ($14)

Don’t skip dessert here! The Matcha Tiramisu struck a beautiful balance, neither too sweet nor too bitter, and was decadently smooth. It’s light enough to end your meal without feeling heavy. They even have options to add on a dessert shot for an additional $5 to $6 if you’re feeling it.

And if you’re celebrating your birthday during Virgo season (Aug 23 – Sep 22), let the staff know when you book — you’ll get a complimentary Matcha Tiramisu to celebrate in style.

Drinks

We paired our handrolls with RAPPU’s matcha latte, which was creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced. It was easy to drink as a non-matchy lover, not too sweet or bitter.

Our Verdict

RAPPU is where you can get quality sushi with a lively, modern edge. Overall, the sashimi was really fresh. The September seasonal special is worth a try, but what really stood out to me was the Mt. RAPPU series, generous in both size and variety of sides. The food strikes a nice balance between premium ingredients and approachable flavours, while the atmosphere keeps things upbeat without feeling over the top. Prices are reasonable for the quality, especially with the lunch sets. I’d say just come for the handrolls, enjoy the energy, and finish with the tiramisu for a satisfying end to the meal!
