Have you ever tried eating durians at their absolute freshest? Some of the freshest durians we have ever tasted were right at the durian farms in Malaysia. Freshly harvested durians emit a naturally fragrant aroma, while the flesh is rich, sweet, creamy, and incredibly smooth. However, how often can we travel all the way to these farms in Malaysia just to get fresh durians?
Most of the durians imported into Singapore come from Malaysia. However, by the time the durians arrive here, they can lose some of their freshness during transportation. In addition, durians are sensitive to temperature. Exposure to heat during transport can speed up overripening of the durians, causing the flesh to become watery, fermented, or mushy.
That explains why some durians end up tasting underwhelming, overly wet, or simply not worth the premium price paid.
So, can we still enjoy fresh-tasting durians in Singapore?
Where to Get Fresh-Locked Durians in Singapore
Spike Durian is introducing a more refined, dependable, and year-round way to enjoy premium durian in Singapore.
The brand sources old-tree Pahang Mao Shan Wang durians harvested at peak ripeness before applying multiple layers of quality control throughout the supply chain. One of its biggest differentiators is the use of Agrifreeze technology, designed to “fresh-lock” the fruit immediately at the source.
What Is Agrifreeze?
Agrifreeze is a Singapore-based food technology company that uses magnetic fields during the freezing process to align water molecules, preventing large, damaging ice crystals from forming.
The technology uses a chemical-free, high-precision controlled freezing process that protects food at a cellular level, allowing it to be preserved without sacrificing texture, aroma, or overall quality.
Unlike conventional blast freezing methods that form large ice crystals capable of damaging the durian flesh, Agrifreeze creates finer, rounded crystals that help preserve the fruit’s original creamy texture, fragrance, bittersweet complexity, and rich consistency even after thawing.
Because of this technology, Spike Durian is able to deliver consistently fresh-tasting Mao Shan Wang durians directly to customers in Singapore.
The durians are delivered slightly thawed to your doorstep, making them ready to enjoy almost immediately.
Enjoying Mao Shan Wang Durian all-year round
You can order the durians online through the Spike Durian website. Each box of Pahang Old-Tree Mao Shan Wang weighs 400 grams and is priced at SGD45.
Interestingly, customers can also select their preferred flavour profile — sweet or bitter. If you prefer sweeter durians, the team will do their best to curate a box that matches your taste preference.
We opted for the slightly sweeter selection, and the durians arrived vacuum-packed and tightly sealed in a sturdy plastic container. Upon delivery, the durians were slightly thawed and ready to be consumed.
The durian flesh looked incredibly fresh and appetising. It was neither watery nor mushy. Instead, the flesh remained thick, creamy, sweet, and remarkably firm.
For the best experience, it is recommended to consume the durians on the same day or store them in the refrigerator. Spike Durian also advises against refreezing the durians in the freezer, as doing so may affect the texture and overall quality.
Our Verdict
The durians were genuinely good. The durian seeds were generally quite flat and the fruit itself is full of pulp and meat. Thanks to the careful packaging and Agrifreeze preservation technology, the durian flesh remained firm, creamy, and intact throughout delivery.
Compared to many other durian brands in Singapore, Spike Durian clearly stands out for its ability to maintain both freshness and consistency. If you are looking for premium Mao Shan Wang durians without the usual uncertainty that comes with seasonal purchases, Spike Durian offers a reliable and convenient alternative.
