SodaStream®: How to Make Sparkling Water with One Finger, like Magic?

Recently, they have just launched the new SodaStream® Spirit One Touch, an electric sparkling water mater that fizzes water with one touch of a button. There are three carbonation levels to choose from with this new innovative product.

History Behind This Innovation

I thought that SodaStream® is a new kid on the block in the market but who knows that they have been around for almost 114 years, since 1904! Their founder, George Gilbey, created the first soda-maker which became a hit among the upper class. Today, their innovations have been covered by 65 patents and 198 trademarks.

Also, if you’re sparkling water or fizzy drink lover, maybe it’s time to cut down on the canned sodas (which are usually loaded with sugar) and start making your fizzy sodas at home – minus the sugar and artificial flavourings. You will be amazed by how much your waistline would reduce by just cutting out those sugary store-bought fizzy drinks.

How to ‘soda’ up your drinks with SodaStream®?

It’s my first time using the SodaStream® Spirit One Touch, and albeit it is easy to use, there are a few things you have to take note. And here’s a step-by-step guide to follow.

My advice is to watch demonstration videos on how to set-up the machine to avoid any unwanted mess. Since you’ll be handling pressurised gas cylinders, it is best to be extra careful especially when you’re installing the cylinder.

Step 1: Empty all the contents in the box!

You will find the following items:

1) SodaStream® Machine

2) Carbon Dioxide Gas Cylinder

3) 1 Carbonating bottle

4) Power plugs

5) Instruction Guide

Because SodaStream® products are shipped internationally across to many countries, they provide universal plugs as shown below.

Step 2: Read the instructional guide or watch tutorials!

There is an instructional guide with detailed instructions. But like most of us, we are usually turned off by the small fine prints. I prefer to look at pictures instead so thankfully, there’s a graphic instruction card provided in the box. But I still wasn’t very clear with some steps, so I ended up watching tutorials on how to set-up the SodaStream® Spirit One Touch machine.

Step 3: Tear off the blue seal on the tip of the cylinder and unscrew the white plastic cap.

The gas cylinder or carbonator makes up to 60 litres of sparkling water, and it is compatible with most SodaStream® machines in Singapore.

Each cylinder weighs only 1.2 kg each and 425 grams of food-grade carbon dioxide gas, with exclusive safety valve patents.

When you are out of gas, you can exchange the empty carbonator at participating retailers for a special price. If you wish to dispose of it,  you can send it back to them for proper waste disposal of the aluminium cylinders.

Step 4: Remove the large back panel/cover of the machine.

Thread the cylinder through the hole from the bottom of the machine and slot the tip of the cylinder can into the device. Then twist the cylinder to screw it tightly to the machine itself.

Step 5: Fix the wires to the machine and plug it into the power socket.

Step 6: Fill up the carbonating bottle to the line as indicated on the bottle.

Do not fill the bottle up to the brim as you will need some space in the bottle during the carbonation process.

Also, you do not need the bottle cap during carbonation so remove it. Do not add any flavourings or syrups at this point. You can only add them after the carbonation process.

Step 7: This is the most crucial step!

Flip up the lid behind the nozzle, then slip the mouth of the bottle into the machine so that the nozzle is now present in the bottle. Then, push the bottle inwards to lock in. You have to make sure that the bottle is hovering above the base of the machine.

If the base of the bottle is touching the machine, that means your bottle is not securely fixed to the machine. I made that mistake on my first try, and the water gushes out of the bottle when the machine is switched on.

Step 8: Switch on the machine and the touch buttons will start to light up.

Press any of the three touch buttons of various carbonation levels. I usually start with the first carbonation level first.

The water carbonation process does generate some amount of noise, but it is fun to watch the bubbling effect of the water.

Once you’re done, lift the bottle and slide it out. If you wish to any flavourings to your sparkling water, now is the time to add!

My Experience with SodaStream®

Overall, it is a pleasant experience (except for that small water explosion occurrence due to that one mistake I made). The machine is slim and light, so it does not take up much space in the kitchen. It is easy to use, and there’s not much cleaning involve as well.

Jazzing up Your Sparkling Water

Sparkling water, when chilled, tastes very refreshing. To jazz your drinks, you can add in some slices of orange, lemons or cucumber. You can get even mixed in some fresh orange juice to create orange sodas too.
