Setting New Year Resolutions is always fun because you get to envision what your dreams and stay hopeful for your upcoming days. It’s like a start of a new chapter; it gives you every reason to erase your past mistakes and sorrowful memories, and start everything afresh. But one thing people fail to forget is that sometimes their goals might take years to fulfil. So don’t be disappointed, if your 2020 New Year Resolutions did not come to fruition. There’s always something we can be grateful for even if our dreams are not realised YET.

A meaningful way to write your New Year Resolutions is really to review your past year resolutions. What worked and what did not work? Living your own life is like running a business. Crafting a meaningful resolutions requires you to reflect and evaluate what you’ve done or been through in 2020. Here’s 5 ways on how you can go about writing your 2021 New Year Resolutions.

1. Read your 2020 New Year Resolutions

Ask yourself if you have achieved any of your 2020 New Year Resolutions and if you haven’t, decide if you still want to continue to pursue this goal for next year. You might even want to change your directions or perspectives about your current way of doing things and craft new years for 2021.

2. Write down 10 things you’re grateful for in 2020

2020 has been tough – even for myself too. I was challenged at work and had to overcome problems but in the end, I emerged stronger. Because of that, I am grateful for all the opportunities I was given.

Appreciating what you’ve blessed with, in 2020, will help you in writing clearer and more realistic goals for 2021. It might also spur and motivate you to dream boldly.

3. Forgive yourself and let go

If you’re going to start afresh, you need to forgive of all your past mistakes and let go of all your baggages. Let the bygones by bygones. It may be difficult to forgive and forget but you have to give it a try or else, they will be stumbling blocks in 2021.

Sometimes I could not forgive myself for being really nasty to others but I’ll tell myself that I will be a much better person in 2021. Better late than ever. A change is still a change – no matter when or where.

4. Penning down your 2021 New Year Resolutions

After reviewing your previous goals, writing down things you’ve been grateful for and tossing out the negativity, it’s time to write your first chapter of 2021!

A structured way of setting your New Year Resolutions is to categorise your resolutions according to these 4 aspects: Personal, Career, Relationships and Spiritual.

I’ve always been crafting my New Year Resolutions based on these 4 broad categories. It will more or less cover the most important aspects of your life as an adult.

5. Be accountable in 2021

Since you’ve spent so much time setting your New Year Resolutions, don’t let it go to waste. Schedule checkpoints throughout the year to review your resolutions and assess your progress. It is a good habit to pen down any updates to keep yourself in check.

Another way to be accountable for it is to post an Instagram or Facebook post on this so that you can always look back. If you prefer to keep it private, just pen everything down in your diary. For me, I took it a step further by posting it on YouTube.

I once saw this Korean female YouTuber who posted a video of herself in 2019 and another video of herself one year later. She did a comparison of the things she shared in her video – mainly about her current life status. It’s interesting and I wanted to do that too.

So I actually filmed a video of myself on 31 December 2020. And I shall do another video updates of my life on 31 December 2021. I pray that I will be a different person one year from today. I would also like to surprise myself in a good way. If you’re interested, you can watch it right here.
