What is this musical about?
This evening I attended the gala night of Gala Night for the Asian Premiere of & JULIET at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sand. This is a Broadway hit musical which is premiering in Singapore from 21 September to 8 October 2023. & JULIET is produced by Michael Cassel Group in association with MTM/Leyline and presented by Base Entertainment Asia. This musical also received nine nominations and won three awards at the 2020 Laurence Olivier Awards.
It’s a modern take on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. What if William Shakespeare were to rewrite his famous play in today’s context while weaving in pop iconic hits by the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears? It is a creative take on Shakespeare’s most famous love story with some interesting twists of events.
How was the show?
Of all the musicals I’d watched throughout my adulthood, I must say that this jukebox musical production has the best music arrangements, stage effects, and the best singers. Music is by legendary five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter/ producer Max Martin so I guess that explains why the music was so awesome that it makes the audience want to clap, stand, and dance. You will listen to hits like Since U Been Gone, Roar, Baby One More Time, Larger Than Life, That’s The Way It Is, and Can’t Stop the Feeling. It is also based on a book by David West Read, a Canadian television writer, playwright, and producer.
As for the story plot, it was interesting but some parts of it felt a little cliché. It’s witty, fun, trendy, and entertaining overall. There is some matured content hence it is not suitable for children under the age of 16 to watch the performance.
Based on the responses of the audience, I could tell that most enjoyed vibing to the music and even started clapping and waving their hands up in the air towards the end of the show. There was also lots of laughter and occasional ‘awww’ from the audience.
What is the highlight of the show?
The highlight for me was definitely the brilliant singing performances by the cast. The sound system was fantastic and the vocals by the casts were mind-blowing. I wish that my singing could sound this good! All the cast members’ acting and singing that night were close to perfection. I must say that they had gathered a really solid pool of talent here.
Is it worth watching this musical, & Juliet?
It is worth watching especially if you are into pop music and culture. You can also watch the trailer here. And if you are an aspiring singer, songwriter, dancer, or actor, get ready to be inspired by this multiple award-winning musical production.
