This Japanese umeshu bar opened not too long ago at Fortune Centre. Who knew that you could find this modern quirky bar at an old shopping mall in the Bras Basah district?
They have made a wave on social media and this time they have launched a new menu featuring a series of relationship-themed dishes and ‘ex-lover’ cocktails.
From afar, you might just think it’s a row of vending machines but once you locate the door and push open it, you will find yourself in a cozy bar with bottles and bottles of umeshu.
A Ramen restaurant by day and bar by night
Most people would chill at the bar counter and have a tipple or two. Some would dine here with their friends or colleagues. There are sit-down tables where you can also enjoy a decent meal over some bar bites and ramen.
They are a ramen bar by day and a Japanese umeshu bar by night. You can enjoy a variety of appetizers, mains, and desserts.
Largest umeshu collection in Singapore
Behind the secret entrance is a large collection of umeshu, comprising over 100 different types of umeshu. They also pride themselves in having 95% of their umeshus, liquors, and ingredients imported from Japan.
8 Kushi Moriawase ($18)
These meat skewers are pretty good. I have been to several Izakayas where they serve grilled skewers that tasted mediocre. I mean it is just grilled meat glazed with a layer of savoury sauce. But over here, the meat is nice and plump and the skewered meat gives off a beautiful charred taste in my mouth. This is solid.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐮𝐩 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 ($20)
This is a Cold Truffle Scallop Ramen which is presented with an onsen egg. There isn’t any creative element in the dish to suggest anything related to love or relationships but the noodles were relatively tasty and filling.
Puffer Fish (Fugu Karage) ($18)
Pufferfish is a delicacy in Japan for me, it tastes just like white fish. Over here, they deep-fried the puffer fish and served them with a Yuzu dip. If you enjoy seafood, you might dig into this. But for me, there isn’t anything to shout about for this bar bite.
The Makeup Gelato ($12)
We ended our meal with this simple dessert that comprises a scoop of strawberry cheesecake gelato served with a biscuit. It’s nothing really fancy and does not reflect anything related to makeup.
My verdict
Overall, I love the casual and relaxing vibes of this bar. The moment you step into the bar, you can immediately sense that change in the atmosphere. It felt like you were entering a room where all the cool kids hang out.
This bar seems pretty popular and I can see why people enjoy coming to this bar for drinks. Besides, the novelty of entering a place through a secret door sounds fun and exciting. And if you were to hang out here, I would recommend you guys go for their umeshu and bar bites like Izakaya. In other words, come here for the drinks and vibe only and have dinner elsewhere.
