Berrylicious Protein Shake

Since I’m on a vegetarian diet on most days, I feel that my body is lacking of protein and other nutrients like Vitamin B6 which are found mainly in poultry products. I came to this realization when I notice that my muscle mass decrease very easily when I stopped lifting weights or exercising. Thus, these days, I’ve been trying to make it a point to incorporate high protein food into my diet. And one of the best ways is to drink up a glass of protein shake, like all fitness bunnies do.
However, I am not too keen on adding whey powder or protein powder into my smoothies or shakes just yet as I do not what really goes into these protein supplements. My best bet here is to choose food which are high in protein from natural sources. Food like beans, soymilk, pumpkin seeds, almonds and flaxseeds are great sources of protein for vegans and raw foodists. So, here’s my take on a healthy protein shake using these simple ingredients which can be bought from our local supermarkets.

Sprouted Flax seeds with Cranberries from Natural Park

Flaxseeds is an outstanding source of omega-3-fatty acids that boost the health of your cardiovascular system. However, it was said that flaxseeds, itself has little nutritional benefits unless it’s sprouted where nutrients from the seeds are readily available for the human body to digest. That’s because seeds, in general, contains natural enzyme inhibitors to prevent the breakdown of the seed wall until it starts to sprout. You could say that it’s a nature’s way of distributing the seeds. So there goes the craze over sprouted seeds. Even some health chips like Simply Unbeatable Blue Tortilla chips which uses sprouted seeds.

This version of protein shake comes out as really thick so it’s pretty filling. It’s a nice perk-me-up morning protein shake to start off your day on a lean note.
