Hello Sunshine!
A few days ago, I was at Rex Studio doing a portrait photoshoot for my blog. I did both indoor and outdoor shoots with one of their young, artistic and talented photographer,
Si Ma Dan. Her portfolio is pretty impressive! She does more of high fashion photography which is what I was looking in a photographer, to take more of a fashion editorial shoot rather than a wedding or happy-smiley sort of photos with a nice background. Though I didn’t communicate my expectations and preferences for the kind of photoshoot I want, I sort of knew that her style of photography and ideas is in line with what I’ve always wanted to do – taking cool magazine-material type of fashion editorial shots.
It’s been quite some time since I last had a photoshoot. Before a photoshoot, I usually get a little apprehensive about my hair, makeup and outfits. Should I get a nicer haircut? What make-up essentials do I have to bring? Which outfit do I look good in? Worse still, could I trust the make-up artists with my make-up? Based on the several photoshoots and makeover experiences I had, I was never really satisfied with the make-up. It’s either too thick or it just didn’t work out with my face shape and features. The previous make-up artists I’ve worked with either made me look 10 years older or really old-fashioned as some might call it ‘aunty’.
Yes, I’ve been through that so I rather do my own make-up as I understand my features better but this time, I have decided to ‘let nature takes it course’. Who knows maybe the make-up artist at Rex Studio is really pro? And yes, I have to admit that this male make-up artist who did my make-up really did a great job. My make-up didn’t look too overly-done but natural. He used basic eyeshadow colours like brown to contour my face and to bring emphasize to my eyes. All he did was to apply fake lashes, double eyelid tape and mascara to enhance the shape of my eyes. Less is often more. Now, I could only trust male make-up artists because I think they’ve got a better perception of beauty in women.
Their two-storey photostudio at Somerset is well-equipped with wedding gowns, outfits, shoes, cosmetics, fashion accessories, props and photoshoot equippment. So, you really don’t have to fuss up about what accessories or shoes to bring because they’ve got it all. If I’d have know earlier, I wouldn’t have brought a big bag of cosmetics, shoes and accessories. All I need was two outfits for this photoshoot.
First outfit for the indoor shoot
Blue lace dress from CottonOn, shoes and accessories (stylist’s own)
Second outfit for outdoor shoot
Neon pink dress from Cotton On, Striped Wedges from Rubi Shoes and straw hat (stylist’s own).
You don’t have to worry about posing for the camera because the photographer would prompt you on how to strike the pose. My photographer, Si Ma Dan, did the pose and got me to mimic her actions and when you got it right, she would say “That’s right!Good!Don’t move, ok?” in mandarin. She’s really patient and encouraging too.
Communication with the photographer is very important here. The photographer got to make you feel confident and good of yourself so that you will feel comfortable during the photoshoot. As the model, you will need to try your best to follow her instructions and cues. So it’s really crucial that you are working with a photographer which you’re really comfortable with.
It can be quite tiring especially doing outdoor photoshoots during the day. It was rather warm outside and I was sweating buckets. But I enjoyed the outdoor photoshoot the most. I guess natural lighting works better on my face.
Let’s just hope the photos turned out well without beads of perspiration dripping down my face in photos.
The cosmetics used were mainly from MAC.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience to be working with the photographer and stylist at Rex Studio and I can’t wait for the photos to be out! Watch out for my next post!
