Delamere Dairy Goat’s Milk : Another Milk Alternative

I love drinking milk so lately, I’ve been on a quest to try and taste different types of milk – from dairy, nuts, soya to organic milk. In general, milk itself has several health benefits but there are some controversial health issues about drinking dairy and soya milk. There were also debates about fresh whole milk being healthier than skimmed or low-fat milk since whole milk are ‘purer’ than low-fat milk which has been chemically processed. So, when it comes to milk, it’s really hard to compare which one is healthier in terms of its nutritional value. But for me, I go by this rule – choose unflavoured, natural and pure whole milk over other types of milk.

So far I’ve featured only almond milk and rice milk as a non-dairy alternative, and today, I will be introducing goat’s milk, a natural dairy milk alternative to cow’s milk. You’d be surprise to know that more than 50% of the world population consumes goat’s milk. My guess for the explanation for this figure could be that a majority of the world population are lactose-intolerant, just like my brother who grew up drinking goat’s milk when young. There also could be other reasons as to why people chose goat’s milk over to cow’s milk.

This is what I gathered from online sources:

1. Goat’s milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk with its smaller fat globules and easily broken-down proteins. It takes 20 minutes for the human body to digest goat’s milk and up to 24 hours to digest cow’s milk.

2. Goat’s milk is an alternative for lactose-intolerant people as Goat’s milk has a lesser lactose (milk sugar)content as compared to cow’s milk.

3. Biochemically speaking, goat’s milk is closer to human mother’s milk than cow’s milk. Hence, it’s suitable for children who have problems digesting cow’s milk.

4. Goat’s milk is better for the environment. Goats, in general, eat less and occupy less grazing space as compared to cows. Thus, goat farms tend to generate lesser carbon footprints than cow farms. Goat’s milk are also less laden with artificial hormones and antibiotics as compared to cows which were treated with such chemicals to boost milk production or to grow fatter and faster.

Other health benefits of goat’s milk includes it’s non-allergic, soothing for the digestive tract and naturally homogenized.Even Dr.Oz, an American-Turkish surgeon and television personality, also recommended drinking goat’s milk and eating goat’s cheese as a way to live longer.

The carton is recyclable as it is made from wood, a natural resource.

So, if goat’s milk is that popular and beneficial, why doesn’t our local supermarkets in Singapore sell goat’s milk? A walk along the supermarket aisles tells me that goat’s milk are probably not in demand yet. There are so many variations of cow’s milk – organic milk, whole milk, UHT milk, skimmed milk and low-fat milk and there are even almond, hazelnut, rice and soyamilk available but not goat’s milk. But that’s not to say that you can’t find goat’s milk in Singapore. The Delamere Dairy UHT Whole Goat’s milk is currently sold at Cold Storage and Market Place.

However, not many enjoy the taste of goat’s milk. I’m one of those who can’t really take the raw taste of goat’s milk. But Delamere Dairy’s Goat’s milk has a milder taste that is quite tolerable for those who are new to Goat’s milk. Like cow’s milk, goat’s milk is also a great source of calcium.
Delamere Dairy’s UHT Whole Goat’s milk can be stored at room temperature but once opened, do keep it refrigerated and try to consume within 3 days after opening.

Besides drinking it fresh out of the carton, you can enjoy it with oats, cereals, tea or coffee. And if you asked me which type of milk I prefer? I still do enjoy the taste of fresh cow’s milk.
