Ditch the Butter, Go for Dairy-Free Spreads

Like Julia Child, I grew to love the taste of butter as my palette becomes more sensitive to the taste of food. It’s my favourite breakfast spread on my toast and I don’t think I could ever without it. But the tastiest things in life always comes with a ‘body burden’ tag. In this case, it’s the high amount of saturated fat and cholesterol. Consuming too much butter is going to make your heart work much harder to pump blood through clogged arteries. But thank goodness, there are healthier alternatives to butter which I could still enjoy the “buttery” taste of spread without having to burden the heart.
A quick browse across the refrigerated section where butter and margarine could be found, you would be able to find several butter substitutes like olive spread and canola spread which are lower in fat and cholesterol content as compared to butter. But taste-wise, especially olive spread, is far off from the taste of real creamy luxurious butter. Just when I thought that there isn’t any hope in finding the perfect replacement for butter, I came across this brand of margarine-like spread that stood out from the rest of the butter substitutes in terms of taste and texture. It does not taste exactly like butter but it has this slight buttery fragrance which is enough to trick my senses into thinking that I’ve just licked off a thin layer of melted butter from my toast. The Dairy Free spread by Tablelands is possibly the closest thing to butter on earth. You could almost say they are siblings of each other.

Lately, I’ve formed a habit of scrutinizing the ingredient lists and examining food labels to check for the nutritional value of the food. It’s one of those things you will learn to pick up once you become conscious of what really goes into your body.

It’s halal and kosher certified. I was puzzled by the word kosher and a quick google search reveals that kosher certified products would meant that the product is suitable for consumption by the Jews. That’s something new for me.

This dairy-free spread has been just recently introduced into our local supermarkets. It’s currently available at FairPrice Xtra Jurong Point but I’m not too sure about the other outlets across Singapore.

It’s really surprising for a dairy-free spread to taste this good and creamy without the use of any dairy products. I’m hooked to this spread right now as I truly enjoyed ths dairy-free spread with my toast  and multi-grain sandwich!
