When anyone mentions of ghee, the first word that comes up to my mind is unhealthy. I’ve always associated ghee with unhealthy cooking oils or clarified butter used by Indians in their everyday cooking. Back in the past, the locals here in Singapore also uses ghee in baking and cooking but many have switched to healthier vegetable oils.
But recently, I discovered some amazing benefits of ghee. And to my surprise, Ghee actually has healing properties in Ayurvedic medicine. It is used mainly to heal ulcers and constipation. But of course, the ghee I am talking about here is traditional ghee which is made according to the traditional Ayurvedic recipe where raw milk is used as the starting ingredient and it does not involve the use of artificial preservatives or additives.
I’ve never tasted ghee before and didn’t know what to expect. And Aryuvedic ghee? What’s the difference? I get to learn a little more after trying out this bottle of Turmeric Superghee by Pure Indian Foods.
It’s a rather super liquefied form of ghee – almost like a regular cooking oil except that it has some tiny sediments floating in it. This pure and organic Ayurveda ghee has been mixed with organic turmeric, organic black pepper, and organic ginger. Interestingly, these ingredients are paired together for a couple of reasons. Firstly, these spices were grown very closely to each other in a mountainous region in India as observed by Sandeep Agarwal, the formulator of this ghee. Secondly, when black pepper or fat is consumed with turmeric, it boosts the absorption of curcumin, a bioactive component in Tumeric, by the body.
The Grassed Organic Tumeric Superghee (212 g) comes in a small plastic bottle which is tightly sealed. I would have preferred it to be stored in a glass bottle because the turmeric in the superhero can stain the plastic bottle. Tastewise, it has a very strong turmeric taste with a buttery after taste. It’s fragrant for sure as it is spiced up with black pepper and ginger. You could use it in place of cooking oil to stir-fry your food or roast vegetables. There are several ways of using this turmeric ghee. You can either add them to curries, salads, and coffees. Another popular use of turmeric ghee is to add them into coconut milk to make Golden Milk. Since it is a simple recipe, I decided to try making it.
I gently heat up the coconut milk and stir in red ginger-infused sugar with a tablespoon of the Tumeric Superghee. You will need to mix the ingredients well as the fat globules of the ghee tends to float up. Some like to froth it up with a blender or a handheld milk frother. For me, I just whisk it up with a fork and it works too. To top it off, I added a dash of cinnamon powder. And it comes off as a warm turmeric milk that has several benefits due to the presence of prominent spices like turmeric. Golden Milk is usually drunk in the morning and it helps to aid digestion and boost immunity.
It’s one of those health foods which is worth trying but I probably wouldn’t purchase it again as there are already many alternative healthy fats available like coconut oil and avocado oil use for cooking. But if you enjoy drinking Golden Milk, this Turmeric superghee might be your best bet. All the ingredients used in Golden Milk is actually found in this superghee.
My only qualm about this product is the yellow stain which it leaves especially when you get some product on your fingers. You might have to wash the product off quickly before your fingers actually turned yellow. This is due to the presence of turmeric which can leave a stubborn yellow stain.
