When I was much younger, my Godmother ( or the so-called aunty who would spoil me with gifts) love dolling me up with traditional Cheong Sams (or qipao) to look like mini-sized versions of those Shanghainese ladies in their body-hugging one piece dress. Honestly, I love wearing those flowery traditional Chinese costumes with lots of oriental prints and details because somehow it brought me luck. Perhaps wearing red and with a hairstyle that resembles Chun Li from StreetFighter II reminded the elders to reach out from their pockets to give me an Ang Pow (red packet). It isn’t such a bad idea after all to dress up like a walking Ang Pow.
Today, I am no longer that ‘mini’ me and I no longer associate Cheong Sams with Ang Pows anymore. I appreciate Cheong Sams for its refine beauty, elegance and how it accentuates the neckline and the waist. And it was nice to see how Cheong Sams today have been redefined by giving it a modern twist so that women could still look effortlessly beautiful and stylish in Cheong Sam-inspired clothes without looking like an Ang Pao on the streets.
