The world’s largest extended reality space exploration experience, Space Explorers: THE INFINITE, is here in Singapore at the Singapore Science Centre. This exclusive showcase will transport you on an extraordinary journey 400 km above Earth to experience life aboard the International Space Station (ISS) via an immersive VR experience. You may not be able to travel into space but now you can do so through this VR experience.
Through this multi-sensory free-roaming VR experience, you will be able to step into the daily lives of astronauts in VR and get up close and personal with these brave astronauts. You will also get to explore a detailed life-sized ISS replica in 3D and embark on a thrilling spacewalk in virtual.
What to expect at Space Explorers: THE INFINITE?
The whole experience takes probably about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how long you want to explore ‘space’. Before entering, you will be asked to store your bags in these free lockers. It’s good to keep away all your belongings and enter the venue hands-free. You can bring your handphones with you and tuck it into your pockets.
You will be ushered into this exhibition space where you can read the biographies of the astronauts featured in the VR experience. Then you will be asked to attend a short safety briefing before you enter a room with flashing lights. It’s a prelude to the VR experience.
Next, you will be given these VR headsets and I must say that they were pretty comfortable to put on. Once you put them on, you will be given further instructions on how to navigate in ‘space’. The concept is pretty simple. Once you enter the VR room, you can explore the space around you and go around tapping on ‘glowing bubbles’ to watch exclusive footage and video experiences of astronauts and more.
Once you complete all the ‘stations’, you will be led to this seating area where you will sit down to enjoy a short VR footage. This is the last station and that completes the full VR experience.
How was the whole experience?
I think it is pretty interesting to explore space through VR but I wish that there were some sort of a storyline to make the experience more engaging. It would also be great if there is some sort of a direction which will lead me from one ‘glowing bubble’ to the next. Otherwise, I will be spending the whole time wandering about and finding ‘bubbles’ which I have not explored.
Overall, this whole experience is rather educational and highly suited for students who are interested in space exploration. This would make a good learning journey for children in particular. It would be a lot more interesting to kids especially after you have studied all about space explorations.
There’s also a merchandise store where you can purchase space-related items like toys, gadgets and many more.
