Marymount Bakehouse: A Sourdough Bakery & Cafe at Farrer Park

Marymount Bakehouse has finally opened its independent, full-fledged sourdough café at Farrer Park. They are known for their intricately hand-scored, naturally fermented sourdough loaves which are baked fresh daily and come in a variety of unique flavours.

The café menu features sourdough dishes like tartines using sourdough bread, Levain pies and sourdough pasta. I headed down to try out some of their signature dishes and was impressed by some of Chef-owner Ian Ferdinand Chong’s creations. With his culinary background in both casual and fine-dining establishments, he was able to whip out restaurant-standard dishes which are truly impressive.

What makes their soughdough bread stand out?

Their sough dough loaves are intricately hand-scored by Chef Ian and his team. Each loaf carries a beautiful foliage design which is unique to Marymount Bakehouse. It not only looks good but also tastes good. Their sourdough bread is quite soft on the inside and can be kept moist when stored properly. I was told that the best way to store this sourdough bread is to keep it in the freezer and warm it up in the oven before serving. This is the best way to keep the bread moist and soft.

Their popular sourdough flavours include Tomatillo Salsa Verde ($16.60) and Oolong Chocolate Chip Sourdough ($19). These complex flavours are subtle in the bread and not too overpowering.

What to order at the cafe?

Basque Tartine

You can drop by for a simple lunch or brunch at their cafe as they offer open sandwiches like this
Basque Tartine ($28) which is a combination of sautéed porcini mushrooms and chanterelle mushrooms, two sunny side up eggs, and foie gras, drizzled with burnt butter balsamic The foie gras add a beautiful touch to this hearty tartine. The portion is quite substantial and filling.

Seafood Pot Pie

Besides baking sourdough bread, they also churn out really good gourmet pies which are also a hit among their diners. I enjoyed their Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Festive Seafood Pot Pie (from $22.50) which comprises Tiger Prawn Veloute, Iranian Saffron, Tiger Prawns, Scallop and Crab, Halibut and Seabass. It is rich and creamy seafood that would satisfy any seafood lover. Flavours are well-balanced.

Apple Rhubarb custard pie

Another enjoyable pie is their Apple Rhubarb custard pie which comprises Homemade Custard, Rhubarb Compote and Maple Glazed Apples (from $15.90). It is a tasty pie but some may find the pie to be a bit too tart due to the rhubarb compote which has a strong tangy taste. It would have been perfect if they cut back on the compote and added a few more apple slices to sweeten the pie a little. If you ask me what makes their pie stand out is probably their unique pie filling as well as the buttery pie crust that gives the pie a nice texture.

Sourdough Pasta

If you are into pasta, you can try out their handmade sourdough pasta. They currently have 2 types of pasta on the menu. I tried their Lemon Cream Morel & Broccolini Peasant Style Sourdough Pasta ($22), which is the more popular pasta choice. Instead of discarding the excess sourdough, they use it to make fresh pasta by hand. This creamy and citrusy pasta was served with broccolini and morels in a lemon cream sauce.

My Verdict

I would love to be back to try out their other Levain pie creations as well as sourdough bread. It is a nice cafe to just sit down and have a drink with some pies or sandwiches.
