This is because no one does coffee drinks the way Big Short Coffee does. They create coffee cocktails using techniques from molecular gastronomy and cocktail bars to craft coffee-based drinks that would appeal to the masses. The drinks not only look aesthetically-pleasing but also pleasant to drink.
About Short Coffee
The cafe was co-founded by Ms Daphne Phee and Mr Harry Grover who founded Common Man Coffee Roasters. They spent a few years experimenting on cocktail-inspired coffee drinks before opening Big Short Coffee in Joo Chiat.

A Cosy Coffee Bar
It is located within Sycamore Tree building, right opposite Joo Chiat Community Club. It functions more like a coffee stand where you order, grab and go. There aren’t any tables but just a row of seats lined against the glass windows. Seats are limited so I wouldn’t recommend you to hang around there.

A Viral Coffee Spot
They have garnered quite alot of attention on social media ever since they opened their doors last year. And till today, the bar is packed with people – mostly tourists who were probably exploring the Joo Chiat neighbourhood too.
I was there on a Monday afternoon and I had to wait for about 15 minutes for my drinks to be ready. And there weren’t any empty seats when I walked in. Most of them would prefer to stay on and enjoy their drinks there with their friends.

What makes them stand out is also their low bar counter which allows customers to watch how their drinks are being prepared right infront of them. The baristas also make the effort to engage with their customers by explaining to them the ingredients used. That human touch is probably what makes their regulars come back to try out their new coffee creations.
Chapter 4 : Spring 2025
New drinks are introduced every season at Big Short Coffee. I have tried their drinks from the past two seasonal menu and I must say that their current Spring Menu is the best one yet.
The price of the drinks range from $8 to $9.

There’s a total of 7 drinks in this current spring menu. The only non-coffee drink is Happy Harry. And their matcha is more of slushie-like softserve.
Duck Shit Miso ($9)

Ingredients: big short blend – freddo espresso, duck shit oolong, white miso butterscotch, black sesame salt and fresh milk
This is a brilliant combination of espresso, duck shit oolong tea with black sesame salt. The roasty notes of the black sesame complements so well with the coffee blend while the white miso butterscotch gives it that slight sweet-savoury flavour. It’s such an interesting coffee-based drink that truly teases my tastebuds.
Happy Harry ($8)

Ingredients: Red Osmanthus jelly, blue pea flower cream, wildflower rare honey, fresh coconut water, cane sugar
Happy Harry is another stellar drink creation. The drink itself carries a sweet floral note which makes it a really smooth and pleasant drink to enjoy. The addition of blue pea gives the drink a blue tinge which makes the drink pop as well.
Peach Dragon ($8)

Ingredients: arufa ax – cold brew, macerated red dragonfruit, white peach, jasmine green tea, sage whey foam
Peachy dragon is a reminiscent of their previous series of fruit-infused coffee and tea-based drinks. It’s a light, fruity and refreshing drink but it did not really appeal to me as compared to the Duck Shit Miso or Happy Harry.
Crema Al Matcha ($9)

Ingredients: uji matcha, fresh milk, condensed milk, madagascar vanilla bean, coffee honeycomb
I noticed that they will always have a softserve version in their series of drinks. This time, they have created a matcha softserve which tastes like a creamy match slushie. They topped it up with crunch coffee honeycomb which makes it such a delicious icy cold treat to enjoy on a hot day.

If you are planning to do takeaways, you can ask for a drink carton tray. They do not provide carriers for the drinks though.

Our Verdict
Big Short Coffee’s drinks are like a breath of fresh air in our local coffee scene. The drinks are well-curated and alot of effort has gone into creating these drinks that would appeal to most palates. And they keep their customers excited with every launch of their new series of drinks. This is what makes them stand out from the rest. And I am not surprised that till now, they are still really popular!
And I do see myself heading back to try out their innovative drinks.
